Freedom Over Everything

これまでグラミー賞を6回受賞し、34回もノミネートされた経験を持つ、作曲家/アレンジャー/指揮者、ヴィンス・メンドーザ。チェコ国立交響楽団とともに、ソプラノ歌手のジュリア・ブロックをはじめ、ジョシュア・レッドマン、アントニオ・サンチェス、デリック・ホッジ、ザ・ルーツのMCであるブラック・ソートらのスペシャル・ゲストとのコラボレーションを実現させた最新作『FREEDOM OVER EVERYTHING』完成。時代の空気を反映したメッセージ性の強い、ジャンルを超える革新的作品がここに生まれた――。

これまでグラミー賞を6回受賞し、34回もノミネートされた経験を持つ、作曲家/アレンジャー/指揮者、ヴィンス・メンドーザ。ビョークエにルヴィス・コステロ、スティング、ジョニ・ミッチェルから、ジョー・ザヴィヌル、ジョン・スコフィールド、ランディー&マイケル・ブレッカーやアル・ディ・メオラまで数々の伝説的アーティストの作品を手がけた彼は、同世代のアレンジャーの中でも卓越した存在として広く認知されている。その彼が新たな作品を完成させた。

今回リリースされる『FREEDOM OVER EVERYTHING』は、作曲家および指揮者としてのルーツに立ち返り、チェコ国立交響楽団とともに、ソプラノ歌手のジュリア・ブロックをはじめ、ジョシュア・レッドマン、アントニオ・サンチェス、デリック・ホッジ、ザ・ルーツのMCであるブラック・ソートらのスペシャル・ゲストとの素晴らしいコラボレーションを実現させた作品だ。アルバムの幕開けを飾るのは、メンドーザが数年来交流のあるチェコ国立交響楽団の委嘱を受けて作曲した5楽章の「オーケストラのための協奏曲」。本作に収録されている数々のコラボレーションは、"ソリストをフィーチャしたオーケストラ作品"という目標が掲げられていたが、同時にこの古式ゆかしい形式に新たな方向性を示すものである。
「私がとったアプローチはオーケストラ協奏曲の伝統からの脱却だ。特定のストーリーを語るアーク(弧)を描きつつ、アフリカン・アメリカン・ミュージックのリズムやメロディ、即興の要素を取り入れることが重要だった」
そうメンドーザは本作について語り、さらにこう続ける。
「協奏曲の作曲を行っていた時期、アメリカでは2016年の大統領選により、凄まじい不和が巻き起こっていた。この作品を作っている間、私の芸術空間に自分たちの国で起こっている出来事が侵入してきた。この時私は初めて、自分たちは音楽を作ることができず、環境の変化から離れることができないと感じた。私はアーティストが時代を反映することの重要性を真剣に考え始めた。そして、私が目の当たりにしていることだけでなく、私が望んでいることを反映した音楽を作るにはどうしたらよいかを考えた。その時に、この協奏曲の弧が形作られ始めたのだった」
この「オーケストラのための協奏曲」では、ドラマーのアントニオ・サンチェスが、色、配置、バリエーションを駆使してリズムの質感を表現している。また「Meditation」でのジョシュア・レッドマンのサックス演奏は、この楽章に重要な即興的な声を提供した。(1/2)

そしてザ・ルーツのブラック・ソートが参加している協奏曲の第5楽章「Justice and the Blues」は、哲学者であり公共の知識人であるコーネル・ウエスト博士の2つの有名な言葉を皮肉ったタイトルである。2019年の7月にこの作品をレコーディングしたとき、最終楽章はもともと楽器のソロになる予定だったそうだが、メンドーザは、代わりにラップを通してそこにメッセージを伝えるべきだと考えたという。そしてブラック・ソートがレコーディングに応じてくれた時、アメリカは新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大、そしてジョージ・フロイドの死を発端とするBLM運動が巻き起こっていた。こうした時代の空気をうけ、ブラック・ソートは素晴らしい心のこもった文章を出してきたという。またこの楽章には、デリック・ホッジがベーシストとして参加している。

また本作には、19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて活躍した詩人・小説家のライナー・マリア・リルケの「時の書」の一節をもとに、メンドーサがジュリア・ブロックのために作曲した「To The Edge Of Longing」も収録されている。さらにアルバムに参加しているアーティストと同様にメンドーザは、ジャズとクラシックの両方に対応できる能力と経験を持つ共同プロデューサとエンジニアを選んだ。アルバムのレコーディング、ミキシング、マスタリングを担当したのは、アビーロードのチーフエンジニアであったジョナサン・アレンだ。

かつてアリストテレスが言ったように、「音楽には魂の道徳性に一定の効果をもたらす力がある」というのが真実であるならば、ヴィンス・メンドーサの『FREEDOM OVER EVERYTHING』g』は、私たちが生きる時代に歓迎される作品として受け止められるに違いない。(2/2)

Vince Mendozas Freedom Over Everything is a diverse collection of works composed between 2013 and 2020. This combination of the full orchestra with musicians from non-classical genres is a characteristic of Gunther Schullers concept of the "Third Stream" genre, popularized by composers such as Eddie Sauter, Don Ellis, and Gil Evans. The album begins with the Concerto for Orchestra, commissioned by Jan Hasenohrl and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. Mendozas inspiration for this work came from the feelings in the U.S. during the 2016 presidential election as well as Dr. Kings quote on the "arc of the moral universe." The first movement, "American Noise," starts quietly and freely with strings and woodwinds interacting in a wordless debate. This morphs into a bluesy yet tonally modern groove that dissolves into an electric guitar solo, perhaps representing another opinion in the conversation. A trio of guitar, bass, and drums gradually builds in intensity and instrumentation into a full orchestral discourse. The fourth movement, "Meditation," features Joshua Redman on the tenor saxophone, along with Mendozas characteristic lyrical and flowing style. Although Redmans improvisation was not originally intended to be part of this movement, it proved to be a crucial element to Mendozas vision. The Concerto as a whole is a captivating adventure of spontaneous grooves and soundscapes. The title track Freedom Over Everything is an interesting fusion of hip-hop and orchestral music. Black Thoughts powerful social commentary was inspired by many issues in the U.S., including the murder of George Floyd and the water crisis in Flint, MI, but also reminds us that we can make a better future. The short track time leaves the listener wanting to hear more. The 24 measures of Black Thoughts rapping passes very quickly, and the track could perhaps have benefitted from some additional development of the initial 8-bar orchestral introduction instead of ending abruptly on a fermata. Julia Bullocks expressive performance on To the Edge of Longing perfectly complements Rainer Maria Rilkes poetry. The interaction between the orchestra and voice is perpetually entrancing with the use of sophisticated harmonies and rhythmic freedom. New York Stories is a concertino for trumpet and orchestra commissioned by Jan Hasenohrl and composed in 2013, one of the earliest instances where Mendoza used blues in a classical work. He associates the trumpet with the soul and attitude of New York City, the place that also inspired him to pursue music. Overall, this album is a socially relevant work of art that showcases Mendozas broad spectrum of musical influences and compositional mastery. ~ RJ Lambert
