A Few Stars Apart

2019年公開のレディー・ガガとブラッドリー・クーパー主演の映画「A Star Is Born」で音楽を全面的担当したルーカス・ネルソン&プロミス・オブ・ザ・リアルの最新作が登場。

ルーカスとバンドは、社会的に不利な状況に置かれていた1年の大半を費やして新曲を制作した後、2020年末に、自分たちが信じる曲を携えて、ナッシュビルの有名なミュージック・ロウにあるRCAの歴史的なスタジオAに到着し3週間かけてじっくりとレコーディングされた本作。これまで一緒に経験してきたすべてのことを考えると、自分たちの時代は今だという確信があって制作したという。

6枚のフルアルバム、ヘッドラインツアー、大規模なフェスティバルへの参加、ニール・ヤングとの大規模な国際ツアーやレコーディング、レディー・ガガとブラッドリー・クーパーの映画「A Star Is Born」への貢献による高い評価など、彼らの知名度が上がる中、バンドは本能的に何か高いものに到達したいと考え、著名なプロデューサーであるデイヴ・コブ(クリス・ステイプルトン、ジェイソン・アイベル、ブランディ・カーライル)を起用。彼の協力的で自発的なアプローチは、ナッシュビルで最も才能があり、繁栄しているアーティストたちが、彼ら特有の魔法を最大限に発揮するのを助けている。

A Few Stars Apart opens with Well Be Alright, a moment of reassuring stillness that acts as a comfort and a keynote for the fourth major-label album from Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. The consoling words of Well Be Alright certainly speak to the uncertainty that ran rampant during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time where Nelson found himself quarantined with family. A period of reflection resulted in most of the songs on A Few Stars Apart, while the album itself was recorded in Nashville with producer Dave Cobb. The contrast between the musics introspective origins and its full-blooded realization is what fuels A Few Stars Apart, which feels lean and purposeful in a way Turn Off the News, Build a Garden and its accompanying Naked Garden did not. Promise of the Real dont reveal any new tricks here, yet they seem reinvigorated just getting back to the business of making music, while Nelsons inward gaze helped him sharpen his songwriting -- so much so that he gets away with a fresh spin on the biblical canard god wont give us more than we can handle.
