クリフォード・ブラウン～マックス・ローチ・クインテットのメンバーとして1950 年代半ばに名を挙げたハロルド・ランドは、本拠地ロス・アンジェルズを離れることを嫌ってクインテットを早々に退団、以降ロスやサン・フランシスコを中心に活躍を続けました。したがって、リーダー作のほとんどを西海岸で録音しています。

これまでキャノンボール・アダレイやジョニー・グリフィン～エディ・ロックジョー・デイヴィス、エタ・ジョーンズなどの貴重な未発表演奏をリリースしてきたReel To Realレーベルからリリースされるこの発掘盤も、西海岸、ワシントン州シアトルのクラブ"ザ・ペントハウス"での録音です。

この時期のランドは絶好調で、安定した中に個性を強くにじませたプレイが圧巻です。同クラブでの1962 年、1964 年、1965 年の演奏がここに収められていますが、それぞれが大変興味深い顔合わせで行われ、ランドのプレイも充実しきっています。カーメル・ジョーンズ(tp)、バディ・モンゴメリー(p)、モンク・モンゴメリー(b)、ジミー・ラヴレス(ds)を加えた1962年の3曲は、ジョーンズの輝かしいトランペットと落ち着いたランドのテナーが鮮やかな対照を成しています。続く64 年録音の2 曲はハンプトン・ホーズ(p)、モンク・モンゴメリー(b)、メル・リー(ds)という顔ぶれ。ピチピチと跳ねまくるホーズのピアノが最高です。4曲が聴ける65年のセッションは、ジョン・ヒューストン(p)、モンク・モンゴメリー(b)、そして何とフィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズ(ds) が加わったエクサイティングな演奏。何と言ってもフィリー・ジョーのドライヴィングなドラムに耳が引き付けられます。

この頃のランドはサイドマンとしての仕事が忙しく、リーダー・アルバムは、1963年にカーメル・ジョーンズ、ジョン・ヒューストン、ジミー・ボンド、メル・リーを加えたクインテットでレコーディングしたImperial盤『Jazz Impressions Of Folk Music』しかありません。この"The Penthouse"での演奏が発掘されたことの意味は計り知れないほど大きいものだと言えるでしょう。

クラブが保有していたオリジナル・テープからのダイレクト・リマスタリングで制作されており、LPは2枚組。ケヴィン・グレイによってマスタリングされた180g 重量盤全世界1,500セット限定です。
解説書も充実! レア・フォトがたくさんちりばめられているのはもちろん、マイケル・カスクーナや、共同プロデューサーであるゼヴ・フェルドマンとコリー・ウィーズによるエッセイ、そしてジョー・ロヴァーノやソニー・ロリンズ(!!) へのインタヴューが収録されています。

A Texas native, tenor saxophonist Harold Land grew up in San Diego and his playing always evoked a balance of styles, bringing together the big swinging tone and edgy harmonics of the hard bop era with the warm lyricism and dusky romance of the West Coast sound. The engaging archival collection Westward Bound! brings both of these aspects into sharp focus. Released in conjunction with Record Store Day 2021, the album showcases a handful of unissued live recordings featuring Land and his group performing at Seattles The Penthouse nightclub in 1962, 1964, and 1965. Just as Lands own style drew from a geographic mix of influences, his bandmates here also display the vibrant blend of East Coast, Midwest, and West Coast traditions that were quickly breaking down the barriers of modern jazz in the 1960s. Joining Land at various times are a superb line-up of players, including Kansas City-born trumpeter Carmell Jones, Indiana-bred siblings pianist Buddy Montgomery and bassist Monk Montgomery, Pennsylvania drummer Philly Joe Jones, and others. Interestingly, both Land and trumpeter Jones were members of Gerald Wilsons West Coast big band during this period, and their playing here feels like a small group version of Wilsons tasteful, melodic modern jazz style. Also joining Land for several tracks is fellow California legend pianist Hampton Hawes, who lends his sparkling sophistication to My Romance and the hard-swinging blues Triplin the Groove. While Land never went totally avant-garde, by the late 60s his playing was moving in more expansive modal directions, influenced by John Coltrane and the spiritual and political unrest of the era. Westward Bound! is a buoyant time capsule of modern jazz on the move, before the free jazz era, when East Coast bop met West Coast cool. ~ Matt Collar
