Pianist Sonya Bach may be Korean, but she was a student of Lazar Berman, and there is much of the great Russian school in her playing. Rachmaninov is right in her wheelhouse, and she is confident in the still-considerable technical challenges of this music. Her bell-like upper register here is worth the price of admission by itself, yet her mastery is not just a question of fast fingers and precise articulation but also of deep understanding of the music. Its not possible to say whether Bach is a High Romantic Rachmaninov player or one of the more modern, restrained sort because she has several different voices here and the means to realize them. In the Moments Musicaux that close the program, she is as warmly tuneful as one could wish, even amid all the swirls of figuration. The three Preludes are brisk, a bit severe, and splendidly exacting, and the Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 36, is of the more contemporary kind of Rachmaninov, unsettled and dramatic. Bach plays the composers 1931 revision and abridgment of the work, which he explained by pointing to Chopins second sonata and noting that he had said it all in 19 minutes. Outlooks differ on Rachmaninovs surgery, and some pianists have merged the two versions, but the latter one fits Bachs aims. Hearing her whole program brings the feeling of having been on a journey.
