デュリュフレ: オルガン作品全集

20世紀フランスを代表するオルガニストで名曲を残した作曲家モーリス・デュリュフレ(1902-1986)。オルガニストとしては1960年代に妻マリー=マドレーヌ・デュリュフレと弾き分けて録音した「J.S.バッハ:前奏曲とフーガ集」が誉れ高き名盤として知られています。作曲家としての彼の代表作といえば「レクイエム」。
崇高かつ美しい世界はクラシック・ファンの知れるところですが、オルガン作品もまた「レクイエム」を思わせる和声感と温かみのある音楽です。

パリ音楽院でヴィドール、デュカスに作曲を、オルガンをジグーにそれぞれ師事したデュリュフレ。1927年にはノートルダム大聖堂でヴィエルヌの助手となり薫陶を得ました。長寿ながら作曲家としては実に慎重で、出版された作品は「レクイエム」を含め14曲しかありませんが、その大半はオルガン作品です。当アルバムには2002年にデュラン社より出版された遺作「瞑想曲」を含むオルガン独奏作品が全曲収録されております。彼のオルガン作品はフランスの作曲家らしい色彩豊かなレジストレーションが魅力。ことに第2次大戦で29歳没した作曲家ジャン・アラン(マリー=クレール・アランの兄)に捧げた「アランの名による前奏曲とフーガ Op.7」は、才能豊かな後輩を亡くしたデュリュフレの悲痛な叫びとともにアランへの敬愛を込めた感情豊かな作品。そのほか、オルガニストらしい巧みな技術を要しながらも美しい旋律が印象的な作品ばかりです。

トーマス・トロッターは、1976年にケンブリッジ・キングズ・カレッジのオルガン奨学生に就任した14人目のオルガニスト。その後、ウェストミンスター寺院の聖マーガレット教会の専属オルガニストを務める一方、ケンブリッジ・キングズ・カレッジ合唱団との共演、またモーツァルトのオルガン作品の録音でも知られます。

The tradition of French organ music is so strong and so venerable that theres a tendency among listeners to choose performances by players who come out of that tradition. That may be justifiable, but for a state-of-the-art set of Maurice Durufles organ music, which all fits on a single CD, this one merits strong consideration. Organist Thomas Trotter plays the recently (2016) restored organ at Kings College Chapel, Cambridge, and it fits Durufle well both in general terms and in specific instances. Its power is quiet, without the slashing tones of some older cathedral organs, and it corresponds to the essentially lyrical rather than the monumental quality of Durufles music. Yet Trotter, who began his career as an organ scholar at Kings, is given the ability to be brilliant when he needs to be. A good place to begin sampling the organs wonders, and Trotters exploitation of them, is with the Choral varie finale of the Prelude, Adagio, et Choral Varie sur le Theme du Veni Creator, Op. 4, where a kaleidoscope of colors appears over the course of the movement. Superb engineering from Chandos is another big draw; one would expect no less from the label at the Kings College chapel, but this release will keep audiophiles exploring it for some time. A highly satisfying Durufle release, even in the face of strong French competition.
