作曲家のリチャード・ダニエルプールは、2010年にAn American Mosaicを発表するまで、ピアノ独奏曲をあまり書いていない。この作品は、コロナウイルスのパンデミックの初期に、作曲家の医師から、持病のためにウイルスに感染しても助かる可能性は30%しかないと告げられたことをきっかけに生まれた。パンデミック時に特に注目された様々なタイプのアメリカ人を描いた小品と、間奏曲、前奏曲、エピローグを合わせて「慰め」と呼ぶことにした。その多くは、音楽から職業やそれに類するものを推測できるほど刺激的であり(トラック6「Journalists, Poets, & Writers」)、ダニエルプールのドラマティックな志向(彼はオペラで最もよく知られている)が随所に現れている。しかし、この音楽には、慰めや見える敵、見えない敵など、パンデミックに対するこれまでの音楽の反応の中で最も特徴あるものとなっている、パーソナルな味がある。いくつかの楽章、特に最後から2番目の「Prophets & Martyrs」は、ジャズとブルースのハーモニーを効果的に使っているのが印象的である。

Composer Richard Danielpour has not written much for solo piano, and nothing since 2010, until An American Mosaic. The work took shape after the composers physician informed him, early in the coronavirus pandemic, that due to a preexisting condition, he would have only a 30 percent chance of surviving the virus if he contracted it. That inspired this set of short pieces depicting Americans of various types who became especially visible during the pandemic, together with interludes, a prelude, and an epilogue collectively termed Consolations. Many of them are evocative enough that one might guess the profession or something like it from the music (listen to Journalists, Poets, & Writers), and Danielpours dramatic orientation (he is best known for his operas) is everywhere in evidence, but there is a personal flavor to the music, with its consolations and its visible and invisible enemies, that makes it one of the most distinctive musical reactions to the pandemic thus far. A few movements, most strikingly the penultimate Prophets & Martyrs, deploy jazz and blues harmonies to excellent effect. Pianist Simone Dinnerstein catches the musics unique flavor, and it is to her that listeners owe the three Bach transcriptions at the end; she requested them from Danielpour, and they are ideal counterparts to his work although no direct quotation is involved.
