Seek Shelter

デンマークのポスト・パンク・バンド、アイスエイジの3年振り、5枚目のアルバム『シーク・シェルター』が完成。バンド初となる外部プロデューサーとしてソニック・ブームことスペースメン3のピーター・ケンバーを起用。ポスト・パンク再燃の中リリースされる2021年最重要作。

コペンハーゲンのIceage(Elias Bender Ronnenfelt、Jakob Tvilling Pless、Johan Surrballe Wieth、Dan Kjar Nielsen)は5月7日に5枚目のアルバム『Seek Shelter』をMexican Summerよりリリースする。リスボンのスタジオでレコーディングされた当作のプロデュースはSonic Boom(Spacemen 3のPete Kember)。ミックスはグラミー・ウィナー、Shawn Everett(Haim、The War On Drugs、Kasey Musgraves)が手掛け、追加ギタリストとしてCasper Morilla Fernandezが参加した。「アルバムをどのように切り開いていきたいかという明確なビジョンは持っていたが、それでも最終的には驚きの結果となった」とElias Bender Ronnenfeltは語っている。デビュー・アルバム『New Brigade』から10年という節目にリリースされるこのアルバムからは、既に「The Holding Hand」と「Vendetta」の2曲が公開されている。

Iceageは2008 年にデンマークのコペンハーゲンで結成された。2011年にデビュー・アルバム『New Brigade』をMatador Recordsよりリリース。現在までリリースされた4枚のアルバムは全てPitchfork のベスト・ニュー・アルバムに選ばれる等、高い評価を博す。2018年にリリースされた目下の最新作『Beyondless』もPitchfork、NME、Stereogum、Noisey、Paste、Under the Radar他、多くのメディアで年間ベスト・アルバムの1枚に選出されている。コーチェラをはじめ、様々なフェスティヴァルにも出演。単独公演/サマーソニックを通し、日本でも高い人気を誇る。

On their fifth album, Iceage continue their metamorphosis into poetic harbingers with a flair for the theatrical, leaving their scrappy beginnings firmly behind for better or worse. As always, there is a sense of urgency to the record, with the group even veering into Brit-pop bombast, like Oasis reimagined for red wine-guzzling literary fanatics. Elias Bender Ronnenfelts signature drawl only further positions him as a prophet of sleaze, and the band remain as capable as ever, but its hard to escape the feeling their rougher edges have been refined, as some tracks glide by a little too smoothly to become the kind of earworms they have crafted in the past. Something that decidedly hasnt changed is their propensity for explosive openers, like Shelter Song and its massive chorus that manages to hit like a truck; even at midtempo, the Wall of Sound and soaring backing vocals are staggering. Despite a brief change of pace in the beautified Love Kills Slowly, the energy travels right through to centerpiece Vendetta. The track is all swagger -- it comes out swinging like something in between Happy Mondays and Kasabian, running the risk of becoming stadium-built lad rock, and only avoids such damning praise by virtue of Ronnenfelts natural attitude. It is followed by a strange left turn in Drink Rain, which channels Jacques Brel, and as admirable an influence as he may be, the song just doesnt land correctly, serving only as a distraction. The closing numbers pick up the slack, with Gold City standing out as a highlight. Thats until the finale, The Holding Hand, which proves Iceage still know how to end things on a high note. Its a fantastic feat of songwriting; dripping in drama, it manages to squeeze angst out of tension rather than raucous energy, coiling itself around subtlety and then pulling taut in the closing moments before breaking down completely. Ultimately, this record is a triumph for the band, born out of strange times, and although it may not be their best, their blend of bitter and sweet still rings true. Iceages rugged roots may be gone, and there may be fewer thorns, but Seek Shelter is still a rose by any other name. ~ Liam Martin

冒頭からゴスペル・クワイアをフィーチャーしたロックンロールが鳴るんだから、〈大化け〉なんて言葉も思い浮かぶ5枚目のアルバム。ハードコアを出自としながらブルースに目覚めたデンマークの5人組の探求心は、そこからさらに米南部ロックという幅広い視野を持ちはじめたようだ。ストーンズを筆頭に複数の先人たちを連想させるが、それはレジェンドたちに肉薄しようという野心の発露と受け止めたい。
