世界最高峰のコラ奏者トゥマニ・ジャバテがロンドン交響楽団と出会い、新たな音色が生まれた。 西アフリカの伝統伝達者であるグリオの間代々伝えられている古のメロディーが西欧のオーケストラ・アレンジメントと出会い、新鮮で美しい、アフロ・クラシック・サウンドが溢れるスペシャルなコラボレーション・アルバム『KOLOREN』完成。

世界最高峰のコラ奏者トゥマニ・ジャバテ。マリの伝統音楽を現代に、そして世界へと発信するだけでなく、フラメンコ、ブルース、ジャズなど異文化と交流してした彼が、スペシャルなコラボレーションを実現させた。

今回トゥマニがコラボレーションがするのは、クラシックから映画、ステージなど幅広く活動しているロンドン交響楽団。デザート・ブルースのパイオニアであるアリ・ファルカ・トゥーレとともにグラミー賞を受賞した2枚のアルバムを録音したほか、タージ・マハル、ビョーク、ベラ・フレック、デイモン・アルバーン、アフロキュービズムなどのアーティストとのジャンルを超えたプロジェクトにも参加してきた、西アフリカの伝統を現代へと伝達するトゥマニと彼らは、ロンドンのバービカン・センターのスペシャル・プロジェクトとして『KOROLEN』をレコーディングした。

本レコーディングでは、トゥマニは、Kasse Mady Diabate とLassana Diabateを含むマリのミュージシャンたちとともに、ニコ・マーリィとイアン・ガーディナーが編曲し、クラーク・ルンデルが指揮を執る、ロンドン交響楽団の高揚感あるオーケストレーションが6つの楽曲に収められている。アルバム・タイトルの『KOLOREN』は、"先祖代々"、"祖先の"を意味する言葉だという。そのタイトルが表す通り、このアルバムには、西アフリカの伝統伝達者であるグリオの間で代々伝えられている古のメロディーが西欧のオーケストラ・アレンジメントと出会い、新鮮で美しい、アフロ・クラシック・サウンドが生まれている。アフリカン・ミュージックからネオ・クラシック、そしてアンビエントの境界を融合させた美しき音世界がここにある。

Players of the 21-stringed Malian kora are renowned for their ability to enter into productive collaborations with musicians from other cultures, perhaps because Mali has long been a cultural crossroads. One of the instruments most renowned players is Toumani Diabate, said to be descended from 70 generations of musicians and storytellers. This set of selections, recorded in 2008 at the Barbican in London, is inventive even by the high standards of Malian fusion. In all but one piece, "Moon Kaira," Diabate sets for the main pitch material, even if there is an opening orchestral passage. The pieces are basically expanded versions of Malian compositions, but the ways the material is developed, representing different solutions to the problem of how to fuse two musical systems, are different in each case. The orchestral arrangements, by Nico Muhly and Ian Gardiner, are questing and inventive, perhaps introducing a xylophone as an intermediary step between Diabate and the orchestra or delivering full cinematic strings as in the conclusion of "Mamadou Kanda Keita." For many, the chief attraction will be the sweeping yet intricate kora playing of Diabate himself, which includes such novelties as a quotation from Ennio Morricones score for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (in "Cantelowes Dream"). The arrangements dont overwhelm the rather quiet kora, and in general, the live sound, perhaps using amplification of the kora, is clear and clean. Those who havent yet encountered Diabate may find this an ideal introduction, and its a must for anyone intrigued by cross-cultural experiments. ~ James Manheim
