物語を題材にした、ツェムリンスキーとシュレーカーのドラマティックな管弦楽作品!

2021年からシャルル・デュトワの後任としてロイヤル・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の音楽監督に任命されており、2021年1月にはスヴェトラーノフ記念ロシア国立交響楽団の芸術監督をウラディーミル・ユロフスキから引き継ぐことも発表されるなど、新時代の巨匠としての道を邁進するワシリー・ペトレンコ。
ペトレンコが2006年から首席指揮者(Principal Conductor。2009年からはChief Conductor)として15年間篤い信頼を築き、2021年9月以降も桂冠指揮者(Conductor Laureate)として関係を継続する英国の名門オーケストラ、ロイヤル・リヴァプール・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団(RLPO)。ストラヴィンスキー、エルガー、チャイコフスキーなど絶賛されたアルバムに続いてペトレンコ&RLPOが目を向けたのは、童話やおとぎ話を題材に書かれた、ツェムリンスキーとシュレーカーのドラマティックな管弦楽作品。
アンデルセンの童話を基に作曲され、義弟シェーンベルクの「ペレアスとメリザンド」と同じコンサート(1905年)で初演されたツェムリンスキーの代表作「人魚姫」は、初演時の酷評によりカットされた部分などを復元したオリジナル・ヴァージョンのスコアで演奏。
当時のウィーンの作曲家の中でもっとも進歩的な一人でありながら、ナチスによって排斥されたフランツ・シュレーカーの「王女の誕生日」は、オスカー・ワイルドの物語によるパントマイムのための音楽で、1908年に初演され、シュレーカーの最初の成功した作品となりました。

Charm is not a word often applied to the psychologically murky music emanating from early 20th century Vienna, but it is certainly apropos here. Alexander von Zemlinsky and Franz Schreker were both composers whose reputations were damaged by the twin hammers of Nazi conservatism and repressive postwar modernism, but their music is thankfully being heard once again. Zemlinskys Die Seejungfrau (The Mermaid), based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen and premiered on the same concert as Schoenbergs Pelleas und Melisande in 1905, is the more popular of the two works here, continuing to evolve textually and receiving various performances since its modern premiere in 1984. The work contains tensions perhaps relating to Zemlinskys then-recent loss of Alma Schindler to Mahler, and it departed from the Andersen story as it took shape. Conductor Vasily Petrenko, leading the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra from which he was soon to depart, is especially adept at catching the mixture of emotions in this work. Schrekers Der Geburtstag der Infantin (based on a tale by Oscar Wilde) is lighter but no less vivid, suggesting perhaps what might have happened if Tchaikovsky had lived on and landed in the midst of the Viennese scene. It is less tonally distinctive than other Schreker works, but it is a great deal of fun, and symphonic programmers absolutely should check it out. Throughout, there is abundant testimony to the fact that Petrenko has built the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic into one of Britains great orchestras; the brass writing and the profusion of detail in the lower instruments, in general, are flawlessly handled, and Onyx captures the whole show in great detail. A must for anyone who thinks Viennese music of this period is all gloom and doom.
