南チロル出身、期待のバリトン歌手によるDGデビュー・アルバム

2020年8月、ドイツ・グラモフォンは35歳のバリトン歌手アンドレ・シュエンと専属契約を交わし、その発表はちょうど彼が夏のザルツブルク音楽祭で『コジ・ファン・トゥッテ』のグリエルモ役として出演した時期に行われました。そしてこの『美しき水車小屋の娘』のアルバムがDGデビュー・アルバムとなります。
アンドレ・シュエンは南チロル生まれ、イタリア語、ドイツ語、ラディン語(南チロルの言語)、そしてもちろん英語も流暢に話します。2016年に「ヤング・アーティスト・オブ・ザ・イヤー」を受賞。『オペラ・トゥデイ』誌では歌曲の歌唱における「知性と感性」が、『フランクフルター・ルントシャウ』紙ではその「完璧なまでに見事な声」が絶賛され、オペラやコンサートに引っ張りだこです。
アンドレ・シュエンとピアノのダニエル・ハイデは、アンドレが20代前半の頃から共に演奏し、お互いを高め合い、理想の音楽の伝道者として活躍しています。
今から約200年前に書かれたシューベルトの歌曲集『美しき水車小屋の娘』はドイツ歌曲芸術の最高のテキストの一つです。修業の旅に出た粉職人の若者が一連の歌を通して心穏やかな世界へと向かうストーリーを、シュエンとハイデのデュオが生き生きと描き上げています。

Long-haired and charismatic baritone Andre Schuen has made quite a splash, and even with the profusion of recordings of Schuberts song cycle Die schone Mullerin, D. 795, this version made a quick appearance on classical sales charts. Schuen has the kind of voice that makes the listener want to luxuriate, and concert bookers want to pick up the phone. Schuberts sheer melodicism, which reached a high point with this cycle, suits Schuen perfectly, and he exploits his strengths with deliberate treatments of the slower songs that enable him to draw out fetching turns of musical phrase. These are set off dramatically by the relatively quick tempos in the faster songs. One might regard this as a young singers Die schone Mullerin, and indeed, Schuen falters only in the final songs of the cycle, as the mood of suicidal gloom takes hold, but the vocal beauty keeps right on coming. Vocal beauty like this, however, occurs rarely. Schuen gets able accompaniment from pianist Daniel Heide in a cycle where the partnership of pianist to singer took a great leap forward, and he is definitely a singer to watch closely.
