80年代を中心にアメリカン・ミュージック・シーン屈指の人気ロック・バンドとして君臨したヒューイ・ルイス&ザ・ニュース。昨年リリースした最新作は全米チャート7位を記録、アメリカン・ロックの代表格としての存在感を見せつけてくれた彼らが、2000年以降に発表したアルバム2作品が、新装デジパック仕様となって登場! こちらは2010年に発表した、名門Stax Recordsの楽曲カヴァー・ヴァージョンを全14曲収録した通算9作目となるスタジオ・アルバム『SOULSVILLE』!

1970年代にクローバー、アメリカン・エキスプレスといったバンドでキャリアを積んできたヒューイ・ルイスが1979年に結成した、アメリカン・ミュージック・シーン屈指の人気ロック・バンドとして君臨するバンド、ヒューイ・ルイス&ザ・ニュース。1980年のデビュー以降、全米アルバム・チャート1位に2作品を送り込み、「The Power Of Love」や「Stuck With You」、そして「Jacob's Ladder」という3曲の全米No. 1シングルを含む数々のヒット曲を発表してきた、80年代から90年代のアメリカン・ミュージック・シーンを代表するロック・バンドだ。

2018年、ヒューイ・ルイスがメニエール病による聴覚障害を患い、予定されていたツアーを中止するなど、その後の彼らの動向が心配されたが、2020年、オリジナル・スタジオ・アルバムとしては約19年振りとなる最新作『WEATHER』を発表、全米チャート7位を記録し、その存在感をシーンに改めて見せつけてくれたばかりの彼らが2000年以降に発表した2枚のアルバムが、新装デジパック仕様となって再びリリースされることとなった!

今回再発売される作品は、彼らが2001年に発表した通算8作目となるアルバム『PLAN B』と、2010年に発表した通算9作目のアルバムでありメンフィス・ソウルの名門Stax Recordsの楽曲をカヴァーした『SOULSVILLE』の2作品。共にデジパック仕様を採用した新装リパッケージ盤でのリリースとなる。

ヒューイ・ルイス&ザ・ニュースが2010年に発表した、通算9作目となるスタジオ・アルバム。この作品は彼らが影響を受けたサザン・ソウル/メンフィス・ソウルの名門レーベル、Stax Recordsの楽曲をカヴァーした、Stax Recordsへのトリビュート・アルバム的作品となっており、全米インディペンデント・アルバム・チャートで15位を記録したアルバムだ。「Respect Yoursel」では、アメリカのゴスペル・シンガー、ドロシー・クームス・モリソンとのデュエットを披露している。

Soulsville U.S.A. was the Memphis neighborhood where the great Stax label was located during the ‘60s and ‘70s, so it only makes sense that Huey Lewis & the News decided to call their album-length salute to Stax Soulsville, saluting a place that has, some 40 years later, turned into a state of mind. The group headed to Memphis to cut this 14-track album but since the Stax studio has long since shuttered, they went to Ardent, yet another legendary Memphis studio, to record with producer Jim Gaines, who helmed the band’s big ‘80s hits Sports and Fore! Not surprisingly, Soulsville winds up like a bunch of old friends having fun revisiting their favorite tunes. It’s an unhurried, affectionate tribute, the News riding grooves that are considerably cleaner than the classic Stax sides they love so much, but they nevertheless wind up with a warm, soulful vibe. They don’t reinvent or reinterpret these songs but stay true to the spirit of Stax, and what makes the album successful is that Huey Lewis & the News don’t choose the obvious tunes (only the Staple Singers’ “Respect Yourself” was a genuine crossover smash); they cherry-pick their favorite sides from the label’s deep catalog.
