アイルランド出身の作曲家、チャールズ・ヴィリアーズ・スタンフォード。7曲の交響曲を含む数多くの作品を残し、19世紀英国音楽発展の立役者と目されながらも、20世紀になると一部の合唱作品の他はほとんど忘れられてしまいました。
このアルバムでは、名バリトンのロデリック・ウィリアムズと、2017年に開催された「第62回キャスリーン・フェリアー賞」で第2位を獲得した若きテノールのジェームズ・ウェイの歌唱で、スタンフォードのさまざまな歌曲を収録。中でも「ロバート・ブリッジの詩による3つの歌」と「愛の勝利」は世界初録音となります。
他にはウォルト・ホイットマンの詩による「信仰の歌」、遺作となったエドワード・リアの詩によるユニークな曲調を持つ「ナンセンスな詩」など、どの曲も英国詩人たちが紡ぐ美しい言葉が巧みにロマンティックな音楽へと織り込まれています。ピアノを担当するアンドルー・ウェストも力強い演奏を聴かせます。
