指揮者、編曲家、そしてライト・ミュージックやアメリカ音楽のスペシャリストとして活躍する名指揮者、ジョン・ウィルソン。ウィルソンが再結成した「シンフォニア・オヴ・ロンドン」とは、コルンゴルトの「交響曲嬰ヘ調 Op.40」(CHSA5220)で「BBCミュージック・マガジン賞2020」の管弦楽部門賞を受賞、レスピーギの「ローマ三部作(CHSA5261)」はレコード芸術、グラモフォン誌、BBCミュージック・マガジンでそれぞれ「特選盤」に選ばれるなど、絶大な評価を獲得しています。

そんな絶好調のジョン・ウィルソン&シンフォニア・オヴ・ロンドンによる新録音は、1997年から2005年までイングリッシュ・ナショナル・オペラ(ENO)のプリンシパルを務め、英国とヨーロッパ全土で活躍する名ソプラノ、リンダ・リチャードソンが歌うイタリアのオペラ・アリア集。モンテヴェルディからワーグナーまで、オペラとオラトリオの両面で幅広く活動してきたリチャードソンが、長いキャリアの中で特別な愛と親和性を見出してきたというイタリア・オペラの主役たち。「運命の力」、「椿姫」、「ラ・ボエーム」、「ノルマ」、「蝶々夫人」など、イタリア最高のオペラを彩る多種多様なヒロインたちの豊かな愛と喪失の表現を、リンダ・リチャードソンの歌声とシンフォニア・オヴ・ロンドンの優れた演奏で贈ります。

Soprano Linda Richardson is a veteran of British opera houses and festival stages. She has rarely been recorded, and this solo debut recording of Italian opera arias is marked by her experience on stage. Richardson does not venture beyond standards, all of them by Verdi, Puccini, and Donizetti, with the addition of the ubiquitous Casta diva from Bellinis Norma. There are more powerful voices on the scene, and richer ones, and when Richardson attempts room-filling volumes, she is a bit stressed, but in her lyric lane, she is exceptionally effective. Casta diva is deliberate and entrancing, and many of the Puccini arias have a real dramatic sense, with Vissi darte, another chestnut, again a highlight. Richardson gets very fine support from the Sinfonia of London under John Wilson, a conductor who, like the singer, has a mastery of dramatic appeal. It may be that this is an opera album that will appeal to general listeners more than to operatic connoisseurs, and as such, it unquestionably fills an important role. The sound is from Londons Church of St. Augustine; its not exactly ideal for opera, but it brings out the frequent delicacy of Richardsons voice.
