French/Frith/Kaiser/Thompson: John French (vocals, drums); Fred Frith (vocals, violin, bass); Henry Kaiser (guitar, sanshin); Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar).
Recorded at Mobius Music, San Francisco, California in March 1987. Originally released on Rhino (70831). Includes liner notes by Alan Robinson.
This is a surprising and satisfying album by an unexpected quartet of Richard Thompson and Henry Kaiser on guitars, Fred Frith on bass and violin, and John French (from Captain Beefheart's Magic Band) on drums. With the exception of Kaiser they all sing and the songs mark the friendly coming together of folk music and experimentalism. The tunes are primarily originals. Frith's "Where's the Money" would have been right at home on his CHEAP AT HALF THE PRICE album, while Thompson's "Drowned Dog Black Night" is an essential addition to his large catalog.
Throughout, French's drumming displays all the multi-rhythmic patterns he excelled at in his previous band--he anchors, propels, weaves, and just plain rocks. This album is a fine example of musicians having a good time creating music that's also entirely worthy of a listener's full attention. There are moments of humor, as well as heartbreaking beauty. Kaiser's longtime engineer, Oliver DiCicco, again succeeds in capturing warm tones from every instruments and voice.
