With his first holiday-themed album, 2020s The Pianoman at Christmas, Jamie Cullum strikes a festive balance between swinging traditional pop and heartfelt singer/songwriter introspection. Its a balance the singer and pianist has been perfecting ever since breaking through in the early 2000s, moving between urbane re-interpretations of jazz standards and his own lyrical pop/rock originals. Its also a formula that has helped him remain a Top 20 chart regular in the U.K. with albums like 2014s Interlude and 2019s Taller. The Pianoman at Christmas makes the most of these skills as Cullum brings all of his varied experience to bear on a set of original holiday songs. Produced by Greg Wells, the album is a fittingly lush production, recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios with a varied mix of big band, orchestral, and small group arrangements. Tracks like Its Christmas and Christmas Never Gets Old are big swinging numbers that capture a Frank Sinatra fireside sparkle. Similarly vintage-sounding, Hang Your Lights is a snappy, minor-key jump blues rhumba in the Louis Prima tradition, while So Many Santas crackles with a Las Vegas high-kicking chorus-girl energy. We also get the bluesy, Ray Charles-sounding Jolly Fat Man with its wry, nightclub sense of humor. While much of the album evokes the 1950s and 60s golden age of traditional pop, there are more introspective moments as Cullum settles gently into the Billy Joel-esque title track, the ebullient 70s soft-rock anthem Turn On the Lights, and the dusky, cinematic string romanticism of Beautiful Together. 「僕たちが愛するクリスマスの音楽の多くには、本当に惹かれるものが詰まっているんだ。12月になると僕らの耳は、ビッグバンドやオーケストラ、美しいコード・チェンジ、そして時代を超えた歌詞を求めるんじゃないだろうか。」クリスマス・ソングの魅力についてそう語るのは、ジャズを中心に多彩な活動を展開するピアノマンのジェイミー・カラム。
2019年のアルバム『Taller』も高評価を得た彼の新作は、意外にも初めてのホリデイ作品『The Pianoman At Christmas』となった。昨冬にロビー・ウィリアムスのクリスマス盤に客演していたことを思い出さずとも、彼のヴォーカリスト/ピアニストとしての持ち味とクリスマスの相性は抜群だろうし、人気者の常道としてももっと早く取り組んでいてもおかしくなかった題材ではある。ただ、すでにタイムレスな名曲たちでひしめく〈クリスマス〉というテーマは、ソングライターとしての彼にとってはなかなかの難題だったのかもしれない。逆に言えば、いまの彼には往年のスタンダードと比肩する曲を書くだけの自信があるのかも……とは勝手な想像だが、そう思いたくなるほどの絶品なオリジナル曲がここには揃っている。『Taller』 所収の"The Age Of Anxiety"が2020年9月のアイヴァー・ノヴェロで最優秀楽曲賞に輝いたのも記憶に新しいが、さように広く認められた実力がここでも存分に発揮されているというわけだ。
ロンドンのアビー・ロード・スタジオで5日間かけて行われたレコーディングは、57名の演奏陣を迎えたゴージャスな仕上がりに結実した。プロデュースを担当したのは、『The Pursuit』(09年)や『Taller』 収録の"Love Is In The Picture"でジェイミーと絡んだ重鎮グレッグ・ウェルズ。サントラ『The Greatest Showman』(17年)で実績を残す彼は、ビッグバンドの臨場感と旨味をモダンに響かせる適役に違いない。結果として、ビング・クロスビーやナット・キング・コールらの定番をオマージュしたような冒頭の"It's Christmas"や"Beautiful, Altogether"などのトラディショナルな作法を軸に、今様のポップネスを備えた"Turn On The Lights"や美しいバラードの"How Do You Fly?"まで佳曲が並び、ジェントルなヴォーカリストとしてのジェイミーの魅力を際立たせている。なかでもエルトン・ジョンやビリー・ジョエルの歌い口を連想させる〈シンガー・ソングライター〉的な表題曲は絶品だ。この時代を生きる個々に本作の歌世界がどう響くのかはさておき、彼が望むように〈毎年手を伸ばしたくなるような〉タイムレスな一枚となったのは間違いないだろう。
