ロンドンの名門校少年合唱団による癒しの世界

ロンドンのヴォーン枢機卿記念学校は、ウェストミンスター大聖堂のヴォーン枢機卿を記念して1914年に設立されたカトリック系学校。学校所属のスコラ・カントルムは1980年創立の少年合唱団で、11-18歳の在学生で構成されています。宗教曲のみならず、「ハリー・ポッター」のサントラにも参加するなど人気の団体となっています。当然ながら男声のみで、ソプラノ・パートはボーイ・ソプラノが担当しています。
このアルバムは彼らの魅力を最大限に発揮した内容で、フォーレの「レクイエム」終曲のタイトルでもある「楽園にて」をテーマにしています。もちろんこの曲も収録されていますが、ボーイ・ソプラノの無垢な響きは天使そのもの。心洗われるひとときを体験できます。
そのほかアルグリの「ミゼレーレ」、ヴィクトリアの「アヴェ・マリア」、モーツァルトの「アヴェ・ヴェルム・コルプス」をはじめ、エルガーの「エニグマ変奏曲」の「ニムロッド」を合唱曲にした「永遠の安息」など聴きたくなるのものばかり。贋作ながら超人気作であるアルビノーニの「アダージョ」とカッチーニの「アヴェ・マリア」も大歓迎。
さらにヴァンゲリスの「1492」やハワード・ショワ「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」もとりあげ、これらがアレグリやモーツァルトの合唱曲に優るとも劣らぬ魅力作であることを示してくれます。おごそかなオルガンの響きとともに心癒される一枚です。

The Schola Cantorum of the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, despite its traditional-sounding Latinate name, stands a bit apart from other boy choirs of the U.K. It is a large group, with an unusually sizable treble section, but individual voices nevertheless stand out in all sections; the blend is completely different from those of groups of collegiate boy singers. The Schola Cantorum has been around for decades, but the group rarely recorded prior to this loosely organized collection of sacred music. Its distinctive feature is that the program is organized around the choirs varied functions. The group sings for services like other youth choirs but has also attracted the attention of film producers and has been heard in several hit films: three of those, The Lord of the Rings, Life of Pi, and 1492: Conquest of Paradise, are represented here, and the choir has an especially fresh, innocent sound in these thats quite appealing. Elsewhere, there are choral standards from the Renaissance to the contemporary era with the ubiquitous Lux aurumque of Eric Whitacre. These include the Allegri Miserere, where the choir fares well, together with various other items familiar to choral singers like the Lotti Crucifixus and the Abendlied from the Three Sacred Songs, Op. 69, of Josef Rheinberger. In Rheinberger and Bruckner, the choir may be found on the lower side of the pitch a bit more often than is desirable. Listen to a variety of pieces to find whether the sound of this group is going to have an appeal; many listeners will be impelled to seek the Schola Cantorum out in person.
