"ウィーン・ピアノ流派"の後継者の頂点に存在するピアニスト、ブッフビンダーは、1980年代にソナタ全集をTeldecに録音を果たしていますが、今回ライヴでの約30年ぶりの再録音を行いました。曲の解釈から運指法に至るまで、独自の観点を持ち孤高のアプローチでこれらの「ピアノの新訳聖書」を解読し、格別の思いを込めて演奏しています。

「これまで40回以上のベートーヴェンのソナタ全曲演奏をしてきました。毎回の自分の研究によって、演奏は進化しています。毎回違った弾き方になってしまうほど、アイデアが楽譜に刻まれています。ソナタには18以上の印刷譜が存在していますが、自筆譜は意外と残っていません。リストは最高のピアニスト・作曲家でありベートーヴェンを崇拝しベートーヴェンの楽譜を校訂しましたが、彼なりの楽譜への大がかりな書き込みによってフィンガリングなどベートーヴェンの全てのものが失われてしまいました。これが現代通常に演奏される楽譜の元になっているのです。私はできる限りそれ以前にロールバックし、歴史的楽器の仕組みを探求し(実際にシュタインなどの楽器を所有)、現代のピアノ演奏解釈に取り入れました。ベートーヴェンの32曲の中に彼の生活の全てが内包されています。そこには、女性への報われない恋心も、パトロンへの感謝の気持ちも見て取れることができます。」と、ブッフビンダーは語っています。

レコーディング・プロデューサーはLiving Stereo SACDシリーズ製作にも携わったッフィリップ・ネーデルと、エンジニアはアーノンクールの熱い信頼を得ていたミヒャエル・ブラマンで、2009年のグラミー賞にもノミネートされた、b-Sharpスタジオ・チームが担当しています。

Rudolf Buchbinder has recorded the complete cycle of Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonatas twice: the first set was on Teldec, released in 1992, and the second on RCA, released in 2012. A thorough-going musician with meticulous technique and exacting standards, Buchbinder is famous for adhering to original sources and avoiding anything not specified by the composer. As a result of his rigorous scholarship, his playing is precise and clear, and everything sounds as it appears on the page, with astonishing attention to detail. His Beethoven is best appreciated by listeners who share his devotion to the letter of the music, but those who incline more to the spirit of the music may find Buchbinder to be dry and cerebral, and not especially passionate. While the stereotype of Beethoven suggests storm-tossed and brooding music that must be played with abandon, the piano sonatas are by and large Classical in temperament, and Buchbinder is sparing with high emotions and reserved in all but the most clearly turbulent passages. In this manner, Buchbinder lets the music take center stage, unadulterated by conventions or popular expectations, and he seems a little self-effacing for the utter lack of grandstanding or egotistical manipulation. Buchbinder's set is well worth exploring at length, especially by students and Beethoven aficionados who take these works seriously.
