待ってたよボス!ブルース・スプリングスティーンが盟友Eストリート・バンドと8年振りにタッグを組んだ新作ロック・アルバム『レター・トゥ・ユー』

ロック界のBOSS、ブルース・スプリングスティーンが2012年『レッキング・ボール』以来約8年振りとなる、盟友Eストリート・バンドとのオリジナル・ニュー・アルバムを発売する。誰もが待っていた、これぞボス&Eストリート・バンド的アメリカン・ロックの王道サウンドが炸裂。彼らならではの「心臓が止まりそうなほど刺激的で、会場を大いに盛り上げる」サウンドに煽られた12曲を収録した待望のロック・アルバム『レター・トゥ・ユー』は、スプリングスティーンにとってオリジナル・アルバムとしては2019年『ウエスタン・スターズ』に続く、通算20作目のスタジオ・アルバムとなる。
新作はニュージャージーの自宅スタジオで録音され、そのレコーディングの模様をスプリングスティーンはこう語っている。

「『レター・トゥ・ユー』のエモーショナルな特徴がとても気に入っているんだ。そして、Eストリート・バンドがスタジオで完全にライヴで録音したサウンドもとても気に入っている。今までやったこともなかった手法で、オーバーダブもしなかった。たった5日間で作ったアルバムが、結果として自分史上最高のレコーディング体験のひとつになったんだ。」

『レター・トゥ・ユー』はスプリングスティーンの書き下ろし新曲9曲と共に、1970年代からの伝説的だが、今まで未発表だった「ジェイニー・ニーズ・ア・シューター」、「イフ・アイ・ワズ・ザ・プリースト」、「ソング・フォー・オーファンズ」の3曲が全く新たな解釈で披露されている。スプリグスティーンと共に『レター・トゥ・ユー』に参加しているのはロイ・ビタン、ニルス・ロフグレン、パティ・スキャルファ、ギャリー・タレント、スティーヴ・ヴァン・ザント、マックス・ワインバーグ、チャーリー・ジョルダーノ、ジェイク・クレモンズ。プロデュースはロン・アニエロがブルース・スプリングスティーンと共に手掛け、ミキシングはボブ・クリアマウンテン、マスタリングはボブ・ラドウィックが担当した。スプリングスティーンがEストリート・バンドと演奏を共にしたのは、ビルボードとポルスターの両誌に2016年に世界で最も成功したツアーと認定された「ザ・リバー2016」ツアー以来のことである。(1/2)

40年以上に及ぶブルース・スプリングスティーンのレコーディング・キャリアは、1973年の『アズベリー・パークからの挨拶』から始まった。彼はグラミー賞を20回、アカデミー賞とトニー賞を1回ずつ獲得しており、ロックンロールの殿堂入りを果たし、ケネディ・センター名誉賞を受賞し、ミュージケアーズの2013年度パーソン・オブ・ザ・イヤーに選ばれた。回顧録『ボーン・トゥ・ラン ブルース・スプリングスティーン自伝 (Born to Run)』(サイモン&シュスター社刊、日本は早川書房)とそれに伴うアルバム『チャプター・アンド・ヴァース』は2016年9月にリリースされた。また、同年11月には大統領自由勲章を受章している。歴史に残る236回の公演となった『スプリングスティーン・オン・ブロードウェイ』は2017年10月から2018年12月にかけてジュジャムシン劇場会社のウォルター・カー劇場で上演され、サウンドトラック・アルバムとNetflixの特番の特番も作られた。2019年には5年ぶりのスタジオ・アルバム『ウエスタン・スターズ』をリリース。また、長年のコラボレート相手トム・ジムニーと共同で監督した長編映画『ウエスタン・スターズ』がワーナー・ブラザース配給により公開された。

Letter to You comes quickly on the heels of Western Stars, a long-gestating 2019 immersion into the lush, progressive country vistas of the early 1970s, but in a sense, its a true sequel to Bruce Springsteens 2016 memoir Born to Run and its 2017 stage companion Springsteen on Broadway. Its an album where Springsteen reckons with the weight of the past, how its ghosts are still readily apparent in the present, an album where the veteran singer/songwriter is keenly aware he has more road in his rearview mirror than he does on the highway ahead of him. Springsteen does find himself drawn to the good old days, reviving three unrecorded songs from the days separating the split of his first band the Castiles and his contract with CBS, adding them to a clutch of new songs where Bruce ponders what it means to be the Last Man Standing, surrounded by the spirits of old friends who may no longer be alive but are still a palpable psychic presence. To help him navigate the distance separating then and now, Springsteen brings the E Street Band into the studio for the first time since 2009s Working on a Dream, but the difference with Letter to You is that the group cut the album live in the studio. It may seem like a subtle distinction, but having the E Street Band offer empathic, effortless support lends a dose of magic to the proceedings, offering unspoken connections between those wordy, windy early works, the cascading thunder of Darkness on the Edge of Town, and the naked sentiment of the aging songwriter. Letter to You often does sound like vintage E Street Band but there are notable differences in terms of attack: Theyre playing not out of a sense of hunger, but communion. This shared warmth carries Letter to You through the moments where the younger Bruce is perhaps a bit too precious and the older Springsteen is a bit too clear, turning a record thats a meditation on mortality into a celebration of what it means to be alive in the moment. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

痛みと喜びを届ける詩的で昂揚に溢れた手紙――通算20枚目のオリジナル作で、Eストリート・バンドとの録音は『High Hopes』(2014年)ぶり。近年は自伝や舞台～映画での回想的な表現を軸に、2019年の『Western Stars』も管弦を導入した異例の古典ポップス風味だったわけで、直球のバンド作品が恋しかった人も多いだろう(しかもオーヴァーダブなく5日間で一発録り!)。とりわけエモーショナルな表題曲や天国の仲間たちに力強く捧げた"Ghosts"、劇的なピアノ・ロックの"House Of A Thousand Guitars"、率直なノスタルジーの滲む"Last Man Standing"あたりには心が震えないはずがない。ディランっぽさも微笑ましい若き日に書いた未音源化曲を歌う様も、過去からの手紙を70代の彼が受け取ったようでグッとくる。
