Katia and Marielle Labeque, enduring stars of the two-piano repertory, havent lost a step as they approach their sixth decade of performing and recording together. One reason they remain fresh and compelling for audiences is that their repertory has constantly evolved, putting their remarkable talents into fresh perspectives. The sisters have played both modernist works and those from the minimalist sphere. They have worked in the past with Philip Glass and became the dedicatees of his Double Concerto for two pianos and orchestra in 2015. Here they offer a two-piano arrangement of Glasss voices-and-piano opera Les enfants terribles; the idea was set in motion by Glass and the sisters, and the arrangements were made by Michael Riesman. In general, Glasss music is friendly to the sisters style, which relies on an uncannily accurate interlocking of the two players and lends the proper glittering intricacy to Glass. Les enfants terribles is an especially nice fit, with the melodies of the original opera set against large masses of sound with sharp accents in the two pianos. Another nice touch is the pair of Glass etudes at the end, one assigned to each sister. Those who liked Katia and Marielle Labeque in the 1980s and 1990s and have wondered what theyre up to, this well-recorded release offers a satisfying answer.
