ヘンデルの名作オラトリオで、新鮮かつ驚愕の名演奏、登場。

クリストフ・プレガルディエンのバリトン歌手として『バッハ&テレマン:カンタータ集』で見事な共演したクレシミル・ストラジャナッツ、『パーセル、ロック:管弦楽作品集』でのリズムや音楽の流れを大切にした解釈を示していたロレンツォ・ギルランダと彼のヴォックス・オーケストラ、さらに今回は合唱も加わった大型作品のアルバムです。

スイスの指揮者ロレンツォ・ギルランダは、ベルンとワイマールの音楽院でトロンボーンを学び、バーゼル・スコラ・カントールムで古楽の研究を行っていました。2008年ハレのヘンデル・フェスティバルで、オペラ「アルチーナ」で指揮者デビューして注目を浴び、ヘンデルの未完のオペラ「ジェンセリコ」の再構成と復活上演や、ワイマール国立劇場での「アルチーナ」の新演出などで、バロック音楽の指揮者としての高い評価を確立しました。2015年にはチューリンゲン・バッハ・フェスティバルのために若手ピリオド楽器オーケストラ「ヴォックス・オーケストラ(Vox Orchester)」を設立。2016年12月、ヘルムート・リリングの代役で「メサイア」を指揮して以来リリングのアシスタントに抜擢され、様々なオーケストラを指揮しています。特に歴史的演奏の豊富な知識をもったヴォックス・オーケストラとは、様々な実験的な演奏も行っており、「この新世代のアーティストらは、300年以上前に作曲されたことを忘れるほどの力強い熱意と活力で、古楽の作品を発見・解釈し、新たなる方法で再訪を試みた演奏」と、高い評価を得ています。

ヘンデルがロンドンで書き最も成功した作品、オード(オラトリオ)「アレクサンダーの饗宴」は、音楽家と盲人の守護聖人とされる「聖セシリア」へのオマージュとして、ジョン・ドライデンによって書かれた同名の頌歌(1697)を原作とし、ティモテオスが音楽によってアレクサンドロス3世をさまざまな感情に導く様子を描写し作曲しました。ヘンデルは1736年の1月17日に作曲を完了し、同年2月19日にコヴェント・ガーデンで初演。翌日の新聞によると、ヘンデルのそれまでのオラトリオやオードとは対照的に、メランコリックで、刺激的な作品によって王室を含む1300人の観衆を魅了したとされます。もともとの詞が音楽の力を描写することに意をおいており、ヘンデルはホルン、チェロ、トランペット、ファゴット、フルート、ハープなどのさまざまな独奏楽器を用いています。またこの作品は、彼の没後も生き残った曲のひとつで、1790年にはモーツァルトがヴァン・スヴィーテン男爵の演奏会用に、ドイツ語と拡大管弦楽編成の編曲を行っています。

歴史的なパフォーマンスを専門とする「ヴォックス・オーケストラ&合唱団」とソリストたちは、若く国際的で優れたメンバーが集められているため、イギリスの合唱の伝統を特に重んじて演奏されるだけでなく、ヘンデルの晩年の失明と宿命的な関わりをもっていると言われて作品でもあり、その苦悩を感じ取るかのように、演奏者が全員一丸となって作品の解釈と演奏に情熱を注ぎ込んでいます。この録音では、ヘルムート・リリンクの元で学び、現在ミネソタ大学教授、ミネソタ管弦楽団の合唱顧問も務めるキャシー・サルツマン・ロメイ女史が合唱指揮を担っています。
