J.S.バッハ: モテット集

いま最もフランス古楽界で注目されている1984年生まれのラファエル・ピション。注目の最新盤は、バッハのモテット集。といっても、モテットだけを集めて録音したのではなく、バッハ以前の時代の作曲家の多声作品もはさみこんでいる、凝ったプログラムです。
「J.S.バッハのモテットほど人を豊かにしてくれる音楽はありません。私は幸運にも10歳の時から何度も何度も何度も歌うことができました。なぜなら、これらのモテットは、歌う人、聴く人すべてに忘れられない痕跡を残すからです。モテットに立ち返る時、その魅力はますます増大しています。その絶対的な力によって、人は感動し、確信するのです。すべてゆるぎない信仰心の表現によって導かれた作品です。」とはピションの言葉ですが、まさに、聴いていると声に包みこまれて高みにつれていってもらえるような気持ちになる1枚です。

ベルトルージは、ヴェネツィアのそばのムラーノ出身、クラクフで長年オルガニストを務め、北ヨーロッパに複合唱のスタイルを伝えた人物の一人。ヤコブス・ガルスは現在のチェコでカペルマイスターとして活躍した人物。ライプツィヒではここに収録された作品は聖金曜日の礼拝でよく用いられていました。ジョヴァンニ・ガブリエリはヴェニスの有名なオルガン奏者で、シュッツの師でもあった人物。8声部からなるこのモテットは彼の中でも最高傑作のひとつです。

There is certainly no shortage of recordings of Bachs motets, and the vocal-instrumental group Pygmalion and its leader, Raphael Pichon, deserve credit right off the bat for achieving one that stands out from the crowd. They even do this in several ways. First, there are a cappella performances of the motets, and, increasingly more common, those where the choral lines are doubled by strings, something indicated by some sets of surviving parts. There are few in which the two procedures are mixed, perhaps for musical reasons, as they are here (the dense polyphony of Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, BWV 225, is left unaccompanied). Second, the motets are interspersed with pieces from an anthology of Bachs time, Florilegium Portense, containing German and Italian choral works dating back to the 16th century. These tend to leave one wanting more information; the pieces from the book included, while attractive enough, dont have any clear connection to the Bach motets, and its uncertain why the particular works by Vincenzo Bertolusi, Hieronymus Pretorius, Jacobus Gallus, and Giovanni Gabrieli were chosen. Nevertheless, Pichon and company do a favor by raising the issue. Lastly, Pygmalions overall expressive style is unusual: warm, consoling, highly expressive, and a bit free rhythmically. These traits are partly explained by the funeral purpose of at least several of the motets. They may go a bit too far for some Bach listeners, but they are consistently and attractively executed.
