ヴァシリー・カラファーティ(1869-1942)はギリシャで生まれ、ロシアで活躍した作曲家、音楽教師。ギリシャ人の両親を持ち、8歳で最初の音楽教育を受けたカラファーティは、サンクトペテルブルク音楽院に留学、リムスキー=コルサコフの作曲クラスで学び、1892年にはサンクトペテルブルクでの永住権を取得。やがて音楽院の対位法教授となりヘイノ・エッレルやショスタコーヴィチらを教えました。教師として活躍しただけではなく、作曲家としても歌劇やピアノ曲を発表、師リムスキー=コルサコフの作風を継承した重厚な作品を残しています。このアルバムに収録された「交響曲 イ短調」はカラファーティの唯一の交響曲であり、4楽章という伝統的な形式を遵守した壮大な作品です。重厚な第1楽章に始まり、2楽章のスケルツォの優雅な旋律はチャイコフスキーを思わせ、郷愁溢れる旋律で綴られた第3楽章、華麗な第4楽章が続きます。生涯、自身をギリシャ人とみなしていたカラファーティの交響曲は、2017年になってようやくギリシャで初演されました。この録音はその記録です。後期の作品「伝説」と祝祭的な「ポロネーズ」も聴きどころです。 (C)RS

Vasily Kalafati was a student of Rimsky-Korsakov who, broadly speaking, cultivated a style somewhere between that of his teacher and that of Glazunov. Even for conservatives in the 1920s, he was judged a bit antiquated, but the works on this release, completely unknown today, would have been anything but unknown to audiences of the time. The Symphony in A minor, Op. 12, which originated as Kalafatis dissertation at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, has an attractively lyrical slow movement with a prominent English horn part but offers little in the outer movement that will stick with the listener. Stronger is the Legende, Op. 20, which is an homage to Schubert and shows little that marks it as Russian; Schubert themes are used in an interesting fragmentary manner, as if recalled in fleeting memories. The Choir of the Music Department of the University of Athens handles the wordless choral passages effectively here. Best of all is the Polonaise in F major, Op. 14, which was published in 1913 and performed as far away as Minneapolis. Its lively to the point of being a foot-stomper, and it decidedly merits further performances. The Athens Philharmonic under Bryan Fidetzis does well in completely unfamiliar music, and the album is likely to be sought out by devotees of Russian music.
