ヘンデルの大作群の存在感を問い直す新たな録音が、フランス語圏から登場する機会は着実に増えているようです。ルセ、ニケ、クリスティといった大御所たちの活躍もさることながら、アルゼンチン出身でベルギーを中心に活動し、17世紀作品などでめざましい演奏を連発する超実力派アラルコンが傑作『サムソン』に臨んだのは注目必至。今年で40周年を迎えた老舗古楽レーベルながらヘンデル作品のリリースが意外にも少なかったRicercarが、「ここぞ」と世に問う見過ごせないアルバムです。
ロンドン楽壇でのオペラ不振で窮地に立たされたヘンデルが一転、再び栄光を勝ち得た新たな作曲分野が「聴き手に伝わりやすい英語台本によるオラトリオ」でした。旧約聖書『士師記』に語られる、寝物語にペリシテ人の妻に語った秘密ゆえに捕えられ、自慢の怪力を一時的に封じられてしまった大男サムソンが主人公。俗愛を克服し、神とイスラエルの民への忠節から自ら犠牲となって敵勢を殲滅せしめたサムソンの偉業を物語の軸に据えたこの大作は『メサイア』直後に作曲され、1743年の初演時から未曾有の成功に彩られ愛されてきました。全曲録音が意外に少ないところへ、モンテヴェルディをはじめ地中海古楽の情念を躍動感たっぷり聴かせてきた天才アラルコンの解釈での新録音。新世代の歌手陣の活躍もめざましく、作品の充実度をいや増しに感じさせる演奏の妙に、ヨーロッパ古楽界のさらなる新境地を実感することでしょう。
