The emergence of the "big beat" genre and the general tendency of electronic music toward rock fusion make more sense when considered in the light of rave culture's early roots. The whole thing started when Manchester promoters began to incorporate the sounds of Detroit techno and Chicago house music into the already thriving party scene presided over by psychedelic bands like Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays. Dub Pistols frontman Barry Ashworth has been part of the London branch of that movement (as a DJ, promoter and founding member of dance-rockers Deja Vu) since 1986, so it makes sense that this outfit would be at the forefront of the big beat renaissance.
Initially composed of Ashworth and fellow DJ Malcolm Wax, the group was expanded to include live guitar, bass and keyboards for POINT BLANK, which retains the tracks from their previous 12" releases. Dub Pistols also sidestep the #1 downfall of most brit-hop by foregoing cockney-style raps and employing an authentic New York emcee (TK Lawrence) on the vocal tracks ("Unique Freak," "Cyclone"). Otherwise, they stick to spare vocal snatches and ragga-inflected beats that fall somewhere between On-U Sound's pioneering industrial dub music and a more boisterous punk sound.
