After years of milling about as a respected DJ-at-large, British club magnate Justin Robertson struck gold with the smart, eclectic, screw-loose trip-hop of Lionrock. 1996's AN INSTINCT FOR DETECTION is the summation of several years' worth of popular singles--and a great deal of painstaking arrangement. Multi-instrumentalists Robertson and Roger Lyons go for broke, throwing anything into the mix--from tribal acid beats, blaring sirens, and sly cinematic references to Scott Walker and Nancy Sinatra samples.
The unique MC Buzz B delivers the lyrical wisdom of "Straight at Yer Head", "The Guide", and "Don't Die Foolish" with the chilled, spoken comportment of an urban prophet. But the dynamic DETECTION is more concerned with edgy yet approachable dance experiments. Such compelling tracks as "Death Valley Clapperboard", "Depth", and "Bag of Biros" recall the dangerously funky, sample-strewn damage perpetrated by Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, and Leftfield--all of whom share a skewed pop sensibility with Lionrock. This U.S.-only, two-CD edition of DETECTION appends a disc of B-sides and remixes gleaned from Lionrock's earlier singles.|
