ドニゼッティのオペラでチューダー王朝期の三人の女王たちを歌った、ダムラウの最高の感情表現!

ドニゼッティの『女王三部作』は、『アンナ・ボレーナ』、『マリア・ストゥアルダ』、『ロベルト・デヴリュー』の3作品。ヘンリー8世の2番目の妃で、エリザベス1世の生母アン・ブーリン(アンナ・ボレーナ)、スコットランド女王メアリー・ステュアート(マリア・ストゥアルダ)、エセックス伯ロバート・デヴルー(ロベルト・デヴリュー)を主人公に据えるものの、真の主人公は彼に寵愛を注いだエリザベス1世。今回、この3人の女王を完璧に歌いこなすのがソプラノのディアナ・ダムラウです。アルバムでは、3作品の重要な山場となる最終場面を収録。ある時は威厳を持って、またある時は激怒、哀願を交えながら歌い分けるダムラウの多彩な感情表現は、主人公たちが王である前に一人の女性であることを実感させてくれる、まさに「生身の女性」の姿を見事に映し出しています。パッパーノが指揮するサンタ・チェチーリア国立アカデミー管弦楽団の演奏がまた秀逸で、ダムラウの歌にぴったりと寄り添い、オーケストラを実に豊かに歌わせる様は、パッパーノならではの離れ業。合唱や共演者たちも全てが一体となり、素晴らしい音楽を奏でています。

It was Beverly Sills who inspired the notion of the Three Donizetti Queens, the three heroines (actually there are four if one counts Il castello di Kenilworth) of Donizetti operas that were set during Englands Tudor period and ushered in a new tragic spirit in Italian opera. However, even Sills never put together an album like Diana Damraus Tudor Queens, which cleverly straddles the line between recital and full opera treatment. Damrau could easily enough have assembled an album of tuneful Donizetti arias, and opera lovers would have lapped it up. Instead, she offers solid chunks of Act II of Anna Bolena, Act III of Maria Stuarda, and Act III of Roberto Devereux, including choruses and the dramatic scenes that pointed so clearly toward Verdis heroines. This is a strong idea for several reasons, only one of which is that Damrau, about to enter her sixth decade, cant match the agility Sills brought to this music in her prime. She has an excellent dramatic sense, though, deeper than she would have brought to the music earlier in her career, and she gets superb support from the Santa Cecilia Orchestra under Antonio Pappano, who gets the chance to unwind a bit. The bottom line is that this is a recital album that gives a feeling for what the whole operas are like, and it would make a good introduction to these operas for anyone.
