エリザベス1世の即位450周年となった2008年に、ウィンザー城セント・ジョージ・チャペル聖歌隊のメンバーによって結成され、ロイヤル・ウェディングでのパフォーマンスなど英国王室と縁の深いことでも知られる男声ア・カペラ・グループ、クイーンズ・シックス。タリス・スコラーズやザ・シックスティーン、ポリフォニーなど、合唱王国イギリスの名アンサンブルのメンバーとしても活躍する6人の精鋭たちによるSignum Classics移籍第2弾は、16世紀中期から1700年頃まで、スペインから新世界(アメリカ大陸)へと渡った宗教音楽の大いなる旅を歌います。
ビクトリア、ゲレーロ、モラレス、アロンソ・ロボといったスペイン黄金世紀の大作曲家たちの作品に、エルナンド・フランコ(1532-1585)、フアン・グティエレス・デ・パディーリャ(c.1590-1664)、フランシスコ・ロペス・カピリャス(1614-1674)、ミゲル・マテオ・デ・ダーリョ・イ・ラナ(c.1650-1705)といった、スペインからメキシコ、グアテマラなどの新大陸へ移り活動した、あるいはスペイン系の両親の下、新大陸で生まれ育った作曲家たちのレア・レパートリーを加えたこだわりのプログラムです。

The archives of the great cathedrals of Mexico, and in other parts of New Spain, have only recently begun to yield their treasures, and this release by the small vocal group The Queens Six covers not only familiar composers of the Spanish Counter-Reformation like Victoria and Guerrero but also some names that will be unfamiliar to many listeners, like Miguel Mateo de Dallo y Lana, composer of the stirring Laudate Dominum with which this album of Journeys to the New World concludes. The Queens Six do not venture into some of the more colorful aspects of the repertory, such as the African-influenced pieces recorded by Jordi Savall and company, instead, sticking to sacred cathedral music. Some of the music was composed in Spain, some in Mexico; while the entire New World is referenced in the title, it is Mexican music that is performed here. Much of the program has the dark hue and deliberate pace characteristic of the Spanish repertory, and there are some very powerful examples: try the stark, riveting motet In horrore visionis of Francisco Lopez Capillas. There are also some brighter pieces, and although the musical universe of the Mexican cathedrals rivaled that of Spain, there is a trend toward a brighter New World simplicity evident in some of the music, and The Queens Six makes effective use of the contrast. The group is certainly much smaller than those that would originally have sung this music, and listeners who avoid madrigalian interpretations of sacred music may wish to avoid this, but the singing is beautiful and expressive in an idiomatic way.
