17世紀後半から18世紀初頭のロンドンの上流階級で親しまれてきたエンターテイメントを再現した古楽ファン注目のアルバムです。イタリア出身、高度なヴァイオリン技法とイタリア音楽によってロンドンで名声を得たニコラ・マッテイス(?-after 1714)の作品を中心に、ヘンデル、パーセル、ファルコニエーロ(ファルコニエーリ)、そしてジョン・ヒルトン(1599-1657)が書いた憂愁の旋律から軽やかで楽しい舞曲まで、豊かな古楽コレクションをお贈りします。

演奏は、オーストリアのバロック・リコーダー奏者兼ディレクター、ミヒャエル・オマンが2001年に設立したバロック・アンサンブル、オーストリアン・バロック・カンパニー(ABC)。バーゼル・スコラ・カントルムでキアラ・バンキーニに学んだフランス古楽界の新世代を代表するバロック・ヴァイオリン奏者、アマンディーヌ・ベイエの華麗な技巧も聴きどころです。

The sound of Renaissance and early Baroque instrumental music is often delicate, but this release from the Austrian Baroque Company comes accompanied by a quotation from Samuel Pepys: We fell to dancing, and continued, only with intermission for a good supper, till two in the morning. Pepys goes on to describe music that sounds very much like whats heard on London Calling, and it is especially noteworthy that he refers to country-dances and also to a violin-theorbo combination suggesting a continuo group. Thats one among several attractions here: the ABC, headed by the pair of Baroque violinist Amandine Beyer and recorder player Michael Oman, breaks down the line between Renaissance and Baroque, which was never all that useful for English music to begin with. Another draw is the unashamedly rhythmic quality of the music; one can imagine people dancing to this music as Pepys described. Further, the level of instrumental virtuosity is high. The dances are broken up with fantasias and variations, and Omans agile recorder efflorescences are impressive in works like the Aria burlesca con molte bizzarie of Nicola Matteis. Matteis is one of several unfamiliar composers represented here. Another is John Hilton (1599?not1657), whose fantasias contain numerous unusual effects. The acoustic has an over-spacious, hollow quality apparently intended to emphasize the big sound of the group, but that is about the only complaint regarding a Renaissance-Baroque recording that is both informative and well above average in terms of sheer fun.
