ニューヨーク在住のポルトガル人プロデューサー、バウアーことハリー・ロドリゲス。2013年にビルボードホット100で初登場1位という快挙を達成した「Harlem Shake」で突如シーンに現れると、ジェイ・Z、プシャT、トラヴィス・スコット、G-DRAGON、M.I.A.、スケプタらと共演をするなどトップ・プロデューサーとして一気に頭角を現し、世界中のフェスでもオーディエンスを熱狂させてきたバウアーが、最新アルバム『Planet's Mad』をリリース!

今まで、多くのコラボレーションを行ってきたバウアーだが、本作では純粋に自己表現を突き詰め、自身が聴いて育ったルーツであるファットボーイ・スリム、ケミカル・ブラザーズ、ベースメント・ジャックス、ダフト・パンクといったクロスオーバーなダンス・ミュージックに最新のヒップホップやポップ・ミュージックの要素を取り入れて進化させている。最近でもイヴ・トゥモア「Gospel For A New Century」のMVでCGを手がけたスタジオ、Actual Objectsのリック・ファリンとクレア・コクランがMV監督をつとめた先行シングル「PLANET'S MAD」を含むビッグ・アンセム満載な12曲を収録。

Four years after his official debut, electronic producer Baauer returned in 2020 with his sophomore effort, Planets Mad. An aggressive bomb of an album, the LP packs a dozen powerful tracks into less than 40 minutes, making for a physically demanding experience ideal for a packed club or a sweaty gym. Each pummeling song inspires body heaving and hypnotic gyrations, working listeners into a trance with Pizzawala and swirling out of control with the drumnbass pop of Aether. The title track buzzes to life with metal guitar riffs before plunging into tribal percussion, a Prodigy-esque electro-rock romp that sets the tone for the rest of this set. Meanwhile, the muscular Reachupdontstop is a whorling storm that sounds like Chemical Brothers or Basement Jaxx injected into trap EDM. Despite the sheer physicality of Planets Mad, the atmospherics remain heady and hypnotic, offering a strangely insular vibe that veers between panic attack and drug-fueled spirit journey (Hot 44 is a pulsing example). As body and mind struggle to make sense of the stimulus overload, Baauer allows for a breather on interlude Remina and the comforting Bipolar Sunshine collaboration Home. Its a welcome comedown after the onslaught, one the carries the album toward the horizon with the equally relaxed Group. With Planets Mad, Baauer charts a journey that elicits emotion through physical response, channeling rage and frustration through his songs in a cathartic release that plays like musical therapy for a galaxys worth of ills. ~ Neil Z. 全世界を揺るがした"Harlem Shake"以降、トップ・プロデューサーとしてジェイ・Z、プシャT、ダニー・ブラウンらとの共演を果たしてきたバウアーの4年ぶりとなる2作目。前作同様のヴァラエティーに富んだ展開で広がるビート絵巻は、トラップ～フューチャー・ベース界隈のシーンを出自としながらも、ケミカル・ブラザーズやファットボーイ・スリムといった往年のビッグ・ビートを現代にアップデートさせたかのよう。とはいえ、ビートの一音一音が確かな衝撃をもって突き刺さる先行シングル"Planet's Mad"をはじめ、ビッグ・ビートが持っていた底抜けにアッパーなヴァイブスというよりは、シリアスなムードを纏っている点が大きく違い、そのあたりが〈2020年代的〉なんでしょう。
