近代イギリスのヴァイオリン作品、特にディーリアスやエルガーの「ヴァイオリン・ソナタ」、「ヴァイオリン協奏曲」の演奏は同曲の決定的名演と絶賛される英国音楽の探究者でありスペシャリスト、タスミン・リトル。オーストラリアが生んだ当代屈指の知性派ピアニスト、ピアーズ・レーンと組み、知られざる英国のヴァイオリン作品を発掘してきた好企画「イギリスのヴァイオリン・ソナタ集」。
3年ぶりのリリースとなる待望の第3巻では、「イギリスのラフマニノフ」と呼ばれたヨーク・ボーウェン(1884-1961)、イギリス印象派とも呼ばれるジョン・アイアランド(1879-1962)、映画音楽作家としても知られるウィリアム・オルウィン(1905-1985)ら、20世紀前半～中期のヴァイオリン・ソナタとソナティナを中心に、ヴィオラのために作曲され1943年にヴァイオリン用に改訂されたエリック・コーツ(1886-1957)の「ファースト・ミーティング」、そして2016年のハートフォードシャー音楽祭でタスミン・リトルによって初演されたジェイムズ・フランシス・ブラウン(b.1969)の「ザ・ハーツ・グレイス(The Hart's Grace)」を収録。

2020年夏以降はコンサート・プラットフォームから離れ、教育や演奏以外の活動に専念することも発表され、演奏活動からの引退が惜しまれている女帝タスミン・リトルの名技と飽くなき探求心がアルバムに込められています。

The 2020 release coincided with the planned retirement of violinist Tasmin Little from concert performances; whether she planned to stop recording as well is not clear. It also concludes a three-volume series of mostly unfamiliar violin sonatas by Little and pianist Piers Lane. The series has contained several gems, but from the evidence here, Little has saved the best for last, and she plays them with a conviction and precision that exceed even her usual high standard. There are two larger works, the imposing Violin Sonata in E minor, Op. 112, of York Bowen and the Violin Sonata No. 2 in A minor of John Ireland, something of an emotional maelstrom. Sample as well the smaller pieces: the evocative The Harts Grace by the all-but-unknown James Francis Brown and a sprightly early Sonatina in C major by the young William Alwyn, who disavowed the work. As so often happens with composers, he was wrong. Things settle down with the final First Meeting by Eric Coates, in a version for violin and piano (the original is for viola). Its a fine collection of unjustly neglected music, and one hopes that it is not Littles swan song.
