シューベルト: 白鳥の歌

ロデリック・ウィリアムズが歌うシューベルト!
第2巻は「白鳥の歌」とベートーヴェンの組み合わせ!

2016年ロイヤル・フィルハーモニック協会賞を受賞、リーズ・リーダー音楽祭2016の芸術監督も務め、日本ではバッハ・コレギウム・ジャパンとの定期的な共演でも知られるイギリスの名バリトン、ロデリック・ウィリアムズ。
2019年にChandosでスタートした、ロデリック・ウィリアムズと名歌曲伴奏者イアン・バーンサイドによる3つのシューベルト歌曲集録音プロジェクト。第2弾は、シューベルトの遺作歌曲集「白鳥の歌」と、ベートーヴェンの連作歌曲集「遥かなる恋人に寄す」をカップリング。作曲年代としては12年しか離れていないものの、後期古典派の香りを残すベートーヴェンと初期ロマン派の夜明けを探求しているシューベルトの2作品。ベートーヴェンの方では声を少し遠くに設定し、ピアノ・パートが目立つようにするなど、趣向を凝らした録音方法にもご注目ください。

歌曲、オペラ、宗教曲など数多の公演・録音に参加するロデリック・ウィリアムズですが、シューベルトは特に思い入れが深く、2017/2018シーズンにウィグモア・ホールで行われたシューベルトの3つの歌曲集の公演に向けて3年間集中的に研究と演奏を行いました。このシューベルト・サイクル・プロジェクトは録音や世界中での公演だけでなく、公開リハーサル、マスタークラス、ワークショップ、ラジオ放送などを含む大規模なプロジェクトで、その経験をブログに詳細に綴っています。また、ロデリック・ウィリアムズは「ウィグモアでの演奏が究極のゴールではなく、研究や準備そのものが私の焦点」と語っており、ウィグモア・ホールでのコンサートを経て更に深みを増したシューベルトの解釈と堂に入った演奏を、このレコーディングを通じてお届けします。

Baritone Roderick Williams, in mid-career, decided to finally take on the monuments of Schuberts songs, and the results have been impressive. This release may be the high point for those wanting just one release, for it adds, as a curtain-raiser, the beginning of the whole Romantic song cycle tradition, Beethovens An die ferne Geliebte, Op. 98. This cycle, although it is not far from Schubert in many ways, has a different relationship between voice and piano, with the latter more prominent. Williams and accompanist Iain Burnside adjust to this difference seamlessly, and the program as a whole reveals many colors in Williams baritone voice. Its worth remembering that Schuberts Schwanengesang, D. 957, was not a song cycle or even intended as a single set: Schubert, who had no plans to die young after its completion, planned to publish the songs by individual poets, Ludwig Rellstab and Heinrich Heine, separately. There is no fixed narrator, and the Heine songs which Williams places at the end, are of a more intense nature. This is one of the more variegated and specific Schwanengesang performances around. Overall though, Williams keeps a rein on his voice, with Wagnerian flavors shut out, and everything fits into the chamber dimensions for which it was intended. Top-notch Schubert and Beethoven from one of the most important baritone voices of our time.
