コロンビア・レコードに30年近く在籍した後、1986年にマーキュリー・レコーズと契約したジョニー・キャッシュが1988年に発表した、自身のクラシック・ヒット20曲を採り上げたニュー・レコーディング・アルバム。
「Ring Of Fire」、「Get Rhythm」、「Long Black Veil」、「Folsom Prison Blues」、「I Walk The Line」などの名曲をはじめ、カントリー・ミュージックの申し子である彼を伝説的存在とならしめた作品群が捉えられている。

マーキュリー所蔵のオリジナル・マスター・テープを基にした初リマスター音源。

Johnny Cash's period with Mercury Records was not his finest. It wasn't that he recorded a batch of poor material; it was the fact that those records were barely heard by anyone. However, Classic Cash isn't a compilation of those neglected gems -- it's a collection of re-recordings of his biggest hits. As re-recordings go, these aren't particularly bad -- Cash is in strong voice and his band is tight, professional, and accomplished -- but they aren't inspired and hardly are substitute for the original records. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
