祝 450周年。澄みきった声、心洗われるひととき

16世紀イギリスの作曲家トーマス・タリスの名を不朽のものにした40声のモテット「われ汝のほかに望みなし」が作られて450年を記念して作られたアルバム。それに呼応する形で、現代イギリスの作曲家ジェイムズ・マクミランの委嘱作「流れ出る水を見た」を最後に置く充実した内容も魅力。

16世紀イギリスは合唱文化が栄え、聖俗さまざまな作品が産み出されました。当アルバムは聖歌を集めていますが、いずれも清澄で透明、心洗われるような世界を繰り広げています。

演奏はスージー・ディグビー率いるORAシンガーズ。2014年創立でルネサンスと現代の合唱作品を専門とする団体。実演よりもレコーディングに力を入れるのも異色と申せましょう。彼らの凄さは、どれほど複雑で大規模な作品でも常に明快で、他の団体では見落としがちなことを再発見させてくれます。

CDに加え約35分のDVD付き。アルバム・タイトルにもなっているタリスの「われ汝のほかに望みなし」などの録音風景が興味津々。またスージ・ディグビーとジェイムズ・マクミランの対談も貴重。日本語字幕はありません。

Any one of the notable aspects of this release from the extraordinary Ora Singers would recommend it to listeners. There are many recordings of Thomas Tallis monumentally resonant 40-voice motet Spem in alium, but the group and its director, Suzi Digby, deserve special credit for successfully bulking up to 40 singers from the original small group. This is an exceptionally rich performance of this famous work. At the other end of the familiarity scale, the motets in the middle of the program, selected by musicologist John Milsom, contain some rare items and are unified by their patronage origins. Finally, to write a response to, or as Digby has it, a reflection on, Spem in alium is a tall order, and it is one that James MacMillan, among the giants of contemporary music in the UK, has filled with flying colors with his splendidly mystical Vidi aquam, with a text from the Book of Ezekiel. Like Tallis motet, MacMillans is written for 40 voices, but thats not the half of it. MacMillan manages the trick of evoking Tallis textures and mode of expression while writing music that is unmistakably his. Its a work that will certainly have a life beyond this project, and listeners will be getting in on the ground floor. Taken as a whole, the album is one of those where everything comes together in a really striking way.
