ムソルグスキー(ラヴェル編): 展覧会の絵

ついにロト&レ・シエクルの「展覧会の絵」登場!!

ロトと手兵レ・シエクルで最もリクエストの多かった「展覧会の絵」がついに実現しました!もちろんラヴェルによるオーケストラ版です。

近代フランスの名作を初演時の響きと奏法で再現することを目指す彼ら、「展覧会の絵」とは言ってもムソルグスキーの時代ではなく、1922年10月19日にクーセヴィツキーがパリ・オペラ座で披露した頃に立ち戻ろうとしています。しかしわずか100年前のことながらいくつかの楽器が入手できないため、長く実現できずにいました。

今回「古城」用として1950年セルマー製スーパーアクションのアルト・サクソフォン、「ビドロ」用の1913年ケノン製モノポールC管6バルブのフレンチ・チューバを見つけたため満を持しての実現となりました。どちらもホルンを思わすような柔らかい音色に驚かされます。

それだけでなくオーケストラの鳴りの良さ、響きの透明さは絶品。冒頭の「プロムナード」から異常なまでの充実感で、微妙な音色の移ろいがモダン楽器よりもはっきり感じられるのと、重奏した際の麗妙な音のパレットにラヴェルの意図と天才性をあらためて認識させられることばかり。ことに「キエフの大門」の鐘の場などストコフスキー以上の効果に興奮させられます。

楽器のみならずロトはラヴェルのオリジナル・スコアや初版楽譜へ立ち返り、クーセヴィツキーがロシア人としての感覚からラヴェルに訂正させた箇所、たとえば「バーバ・ヤガー」のファゴットのソロがもとはアルト・サクソフォンだったとか、「キエフの大門」後半でテーマが再現する際の弦の下降音型がもとはゆっくりしていたなど、一聴して分る違いに感心の連続。名盤「春の祭典」以上の検証が反映されています。

カップリングは「ラ・ヴァルス」。2018年の来日での巨大な演奏が記憶に新しいですが、ここでも聴き手を一瞬も離さないロトの魔術全開。「ラ・ヴァルス」と「展覧会の絵」はほぼ同時期の作品で、打楽器を除けば楽器編成など共通点の多さを示唆しているのも流石です。

ロトはますます音楽の大きさを増し、ただただ圧倒されます。また「殻をつけたひなの踊り」や「リモージュの市場」でのリズムの冴えとスピード感もロトならでは。数ある「展覧会の絵」録音のベスト盤と断言してしまいたくなる一枚。絶対お聴き逃しなく!

The ensemble Les Siecles and its conductor Francois-Xavier Roth have the field nearly to themselves when it comes to the historically-oriented performance of early 20th century music. One might reasonably ask how much difference such a performance could really make in music this recent, but listen and learn. This live recording of Mussorgskys Pictures at an Exhibition (Tableaux dune exposition), in Ravels well-known orchestration, and Ravels orchestration of his own La Valse is ideal in its choice of repertory: it is the old French winds and brass that have a distinctive sound, more so than the strings. The effect is different, more penetrating, right from the brass melody beginning of the familiar Great Gate of Kiev movement of Pictures at an Exhibition, and many sections of that work, such as Bydlo, reveal a wealth of detail that more than compensates for the occasional insecure pitch. Another attraction is that Roth uses a reconstructed original version of the score, unadorned by revisions that Serge Koussevitsky made for the first performance. The winds are prominent in La Valse, and Roth lets the work speak for itself rather than following the garish tendencies of which modern strings and winds are capable. The end result is that these two works, long acclaimed as masterpieces of orchestration, get a genuinely new hearing.
