Glancing at the graphics for this album and seeing Gershwins An American in Paris, with Copland and Bernstein to fill out the program, listeners might expect a light patriotic romp. The album is anything but, and it offers innovative material all the way through. The reading of An American in Paris here by conductor James Judd and the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic is not the first recording of the new critical edition of An American in Paris from the University of Michigan, but such recordings are still rare, and those who havent heard this music are heartily advised to take this budget-priced chance to check it out: it is a major rehearing of An American in Paris. Much has been made of the taxi horns, which do not sound the pitches hearers will be used to. Gershwin labeled the horns A, B, C, and D in the score, which later editors interpreted as pitch names, but a 1929 recording shows that they were mere labels and that the horns sound different notes, and quite dissonant ones. Even more important, and less heralded, is the orchestration, which was Gershwins own, and is wind- and brass-heavy. Gershwin specified nine saxophones, later cut to three, and the result is a spare, almost neoclassic texture. The fun does not stop with An American in Paris; Judd and company also essay Coplands An Outdoor Overture, one of the transitional works in which he forged his populist American style, and Bernsteins little-heard Songfest, a cycle of orchestral songs written for the U.S. Bicentennial. This work is not much heard. Bernstein was falling out of critical favor in the 1970s, and the texts, which emphasize the perspectives of various American minorities, were not quite the red, white, and blue that people were expecting. Its also a fascinating work that comes closer than almost anything else among Bernsteins classical output (excepting the pathbreaking Mass) to incorporating his vernacular idiom without becoming popular music or musical theater. The work is brimming over with melodies and vocal harmonies among the fine soloists, used a variety of ways, and it should delight even those who think they know Bernstein well. The youthful musicians of the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic are full of elan, and the whole album is something of a sleeper.
