鬼才リズム狂 BEATRICE DILLONが、UKクラブミュージックへのたゆまぬ愛と、アフロ・カリビアンからの影響、それらを遊び心溢れる実験的アプローチ、独創的なサンプリング手法と卓越したマスタリングで組み上げた野心的なアルバムが〈PAN〉よりリリース。
UKバングラのパイオニア Kuljit Bhamraによるタブラ、Pharoah Sanders Bandの Jonny Lamによるペダル・スチール・ギター、テクノ革新派 LAUREL HALOのシンセ/ヴォーカル、ポスト・ベースミュージック〈TIMEDANCE〉主宰 BATUによるサンプル、さらにセネガルの Griot Kadialy Kouyateによるコラ、〈HEMLOCK〉の UNTOLDと LUCY RAILTONのチェロなど、各方面より一級の幅広い才能をフィーチャー、生音からエレクトリック・サウンドまで、そのすべてのカラーとメロディをモダンな構成とスタイリッシュな融合で魅せる、イマーシヴにして驚くべき深度と機知に富んだ至上のポリメトリック・トラックス。

The first solo full-length from London-based selector and musician Beatrice Dillon is a set of polymetric rhythm studies set at a fixed tempo of 150 beats per minute. The pieces are intricate webs of subtly evolving beat patterns and acoustic instrumentation from a variety of guest musicians, as well as additional samples and vocals. It seems like it could end up being stiff and academic, but the rhythms are both tightly wound and flexibly elastic, and they playfully interact with the other sounds, building and bouncing off of each other. Crucially, even though the tempo is a little faster than the standard for many widespread types of club music, the beats themselves are restrained, providing space for the other parts. Kuljit Bhamras tabla, darabukka, and dholak playing is threaded throughout the dubby ripples of tracks like Squre Fifths, while on more collaborative pieces, Dillons synth textures riff off of the other players. Workaround Two features drifting pedal steel by Jonny Lam, electric guitar by Untold, and gliding saxophone from Verity Susman, with Laurel Halos poetic vocal interjections providing additional character. Cellist Lucy Railton and double bassist Petter Eldh add physical thrums and scrapes to several cuts, and Kadialy Kouyates delicate kora playing elevates the luminous Workaround Seven. The easy highlight is Clouds Strum, an almost game-like push-pull of playful percussion and dub techno chord s. This, as well as tracks like the fractured garage mutation Workaround Eight, are prime examples of how Dillon stretches out and strips down her music while still keeping it kinetic enough to work in a club context. ~ Paul Simpson

UKの新人女性トラックメイカーがパンから発表した初作。ロンドン～ベルリン～NYを跨いで制作されたそうで、オーガニックな耳触りの良さが際立つ、他国籍で実験的な電子音楽集になっている。インスパイアの根元を書籍や抽象画などに求めたというのも納得の現代版IDMは、ここにも参加しているローレル・ヘイローらと合流して新たな潮流も生み出しそう。ラシャド・ベッカーのマスタリングも光っている。
