This CD reissue brings back the music of a rare LP from the tiny Milneburg label. The popular New Orleans clarinetist George Lewis, backed by pianist Joe Robichaux and bassist Placide Adams, plays 15 traditional spirituals melodically and with plenty of reverence. Lewis' beautiful and heartfelt tone (primitive yet quite effective) caresses such hymns as "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," "Nearer My God to Thee," "I Shall Not Be Moved" and "Lily of the Valley." A special bonus of the reissue is a seven-minute interview from January 5, 1962 that was conducted before a college audience. Lewis is charming and sometimes humorous in answering questions about his life and recent activities. ~ Scott Yanow
