ビリー・オーシャン 約10年ぶりとなるニュー・アルバム『One World』

ビリー・オーシャン。1950年にトリニダード・トバゴ生まれ。10歳の時にイギリスに渡り、10代の頃よりロンドンで音楽活動を始める。1985年に「カリビアン・クィーン」が世界的に大ヒット。グラミー賞にもノミネートされ、「最優秀男性R&Bヴォーカル」を受賞。これまでのキャリアで、全世界で3,000万枚のアルバム・セールスを記録しており、イギリス発の男性シンガーとして最も成功したアーティストの1人に数えられている。10年ぶりのアルバムとなる今作『One World』は、80年代にビリー・オーシャンの大ヒットアルバム『Love Zone』をプロデュースしたR&Bの敏腕プロデューサー、バリー・イーストモンドと再びタッグを組み、マンチャスターとニューヨークでレコーディングは行われた。
ビリー・オーシャンは、今作について「『One World』は、10年以上ぶりのオリジナル・スタジオ・アルバムで、私の70歳の誕生日の記念碑となるものです! このアルバムは、幼少期に影響を受けたカリプソ音楽から、ロンドンのイーストエンドの多様な音楽まで、私がこれまで影響を受けてきた多くのジャンルの音楽を反映していると思います。 このアルバムは私の思想、そして70歳を迎えた気持ちを反映していますが、何よりもこのアルバムを聴いてくれた人々が立ち止まって人生とその意味について考えるようになるきっかけになることを願っています。」と語る。アルバムタイトル曲「One World」がアルバム発売に先行して公開されたが、70歳を迎えてもその甘くセクシーな唄声は健在!

One World isnt the first album Billy Ocean has cut since his 1980s peak -- he continued to record, albeit sporadically, in the 90s and beyond -- but this 2020 LP does mark the first time he and producer Barry Eastman have collaborated on new material since their salad days of Caribbean Queen. Wisely, the pair dont attempt to re-create the splashy, snazzy snap of Oceans 80s hits. Instead, they settle into an impeccably smooth and mellow groove on One World, sometimes ratcheting up the tempo enough so the proceedings can be called breezy (in the case of Mystery, its busy enough to qualify as a club chill-out cut) but usually opting for relaxation instead of celebration. The title nods at the albums unifying theme: Ocean spends much of the albums 12 songs celebrating love and shared bonds. It has a sweet, positive spirit that dovetails nicely with the slick, melodic tunes on One World, music that has just enough of an R&B undercurrent so it could be called soulful but its otherwise mature pop -- cheerful, good-natured music thats settled, not stuffy. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
