ショパン: 24の前奏曲

2018年リーズ国際ピアノ・コンクール優勝者エリック・ルーの深い音楽性のショパン

1997年生まれの若きピアニスト、エリック・ルー。6歳でピアノをはじめカーティス音楽院に入学、ジョナサン・ビスらに師事、ダン・タイ・ソンからも指導を受け、17歳の時にショパン国際コンクールで第4位を獲得。そして彼の名を一躍高めたのは2018年に開催されたリーズ国際ピアノ・コンクールでの優勝でした。この時の優勝記念アルバムでは、ショパンのピアノ・ソナタ第2番とベートーヴェンのピアノ協奏曲第4番を聴くことができますが、繊細な響きを駆使しつつ、深い音楽性を感じさせるユニークな表現は他の若手奏者と一線を画するものでした。

今回のアルバムは、ショパンの「24の前奏曲」をメインにブラームスの間奏曲 Op.117-1、シューマンの「主題と変奏」WoO24という、彼の特徴ともいえる"内面の声"をじっくり聴かせる選曲になっています。メインの「24の前奏曲」は冒頭から重々しい響きに彩られており、多くのピアニストが軽やかに弾き切る第1番を彼はじっくりと聴かせます。続く第2番では不協和音が生み出す音のねじれが不思議な雰囲気を生み出します。以降、ルーは各曲を丁寧に演奏、変幻自在な世界を見せてくれています。静かなブラームスで一息つき、続くシューマンの最晩年の作品「主題と変奏」でも、心の対話ともいえる演奏。22歳の若さでこの表現力を披露するルー。将来が楽しみな逸材です。

Eric Lu became one of the pianists of the moment when he won the Leeds Piano Competition in 2018. He placed highly, as a teenager, at the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw three years earlier, so hes had plenty of time to think about Chopin since. It shows in this recital, which pairs the Chopin Preludes with works by Brahms and Schumann, played in an impressionistic Chopin style. The set of Preludes is distinctive in the face of abundant competition, which with such popular works, is really saying something. Lu takes his Preludes on the slow side, removing what used to be called the potted palm atmosphere from the Prelude in D flat major, Op. 28, No. 15 (Raindrop), and giving the piece an almost Debussyan ethereality. The most unusual aspect of the Chopin is that Lu tries to give an arc to the entire set, even varying the silences between pieces; some of them proceed almost attacca to the next prelude. Its not clear what Chopin would have thought of this, but it does retune the listeners ear. Lu is cleanly virtuosic when the music demands it, but his overall dreamy mood extends to the Brahms Intermezzo in E flat major, Op. 117, No. 1, and the rather rare Theme and variations in E flat major, WoO 24 (Geistervariationen), of Schumann. The latter was the last work of Schumanns before his complete breakdown; he said that the rather mystical theme was dictated to him by angels, and he continued to work on the variations after being fished out of the Rhine when he attempted suicide. Lus reading is a bit otherworldly and quite haunting. A major contributor here is the Warner Classics engineering time, working at Berlins Teldex Studio, bringing clarity to all the various textures of which Lu is capable.
