1990年代のブリット・ポップ・シーンにおいて、そのキャッチーでポップなギター・ロックで一躍人気者となったオックスフォード出身のスーパーグラス。6枚の全英TOP10アルバム、そして10枚の全米TOP20シングルを世に送り出し、BRITアウォーズにQマガジン・アウォーズ、NMEアウォーズに、アイヴァー・ノヴェロ賞など英国の重要音楽賞を数々受賞している彼らは、2010年に解散を発表、その後は各自ソロ・アーティストやサポート・メンバーとしての活動を行っていた。

その彼らが今年9月にグラストンベリー・フェスティバルが主催するイベント、Pilton Partyにサプライズ出演。グレイテスト・ヒッツ的なセットリストで会場を沸かせた彼らは、さらに再結成ツアーを2020年に行うことも発表した。本作『THE STRANGE ONES: 1994-2008』は、その再結成ツアーのタイミングに合わせてリリースされる、彼らの軌跡を辿ったアナログLP6枚、CD13枚、7インチ・シングル1枚からなる超豪華デラックス・ボックスが発売となる。

本デラックス・ボックスには、まずスーパーグラスが1994年から2008年の間にリリースした6枚のスタジオ・アルバムがそれぞれアナログLPとCDで収録されている。 その中には、全英TOP10シングルとなった「Lenny」や「Alright」などの大ヒットを収録した、全英No.1のデビュー・アルバム『I SHOULD COCO』や「Going Out」、「Richard III」、アルバム『スーパーグラス』から「Pumping on Your Stereo」、「Moving」などのヒット・ナンバーが生まれた2ndアルバム『イン・イット・フォー・ザ・マニー』などが含まれている。

この他、彼がが行ってきたラジオの為のスタジオ・ライヴ、ライヴ・ショウなどを収録した、全編未発表音源となる"4CDライヴ・コレクション"が本ボックスには収録されている。その中には、97年のグラストンべり・フェスティヴァル、98年のレディング・フェスティヴァル、2000年のTイン・ザ・パークでのライヴ音源など当時を知るブリット・ポップ・ファンには嬉しい音源も含まれている。

さらにリミックスやシングルB面曲、アルバム未収録のシングルをCD2枚に集めたレア音源集、そしてCD13には、これまた全曲未発表音源となるアウトテイクやデモ音源CD、そして「Caught By The Fuzz」と「Richard III 2030 Remixes」をカップリングした7インチ・シングルも本ボックスには収録されている。まさにスーパーグラスの音源を網羅した充実の内容となっているのだ!

オレンジ色の目にも鮮やかなLPサイズのボックスには、各スタジオ・アルバムにまつわるストーリーや、各メンバーのコメント、貴重な写真を掲載した52ページのLPサイズブックレットに4枚のフルカラー・ポスター、バッジなども収録。彼らのヒストリーを余すところなく収録したファン垂涎のボックスだ。

Supergrass celebrated their 25th anniversary as a band -- as well as the tenth anniversary of their split -- in grand fashion in 2020, reuniting for a handful of concerts and releasing The Strange Ones: 1994-2008, a mammoth box set containing virtually everything the group released during their life span. The box itself is a monster, containing picture disc LPs of the bands six albums; 13 CDs including seven discs of B-sides, live recordings, and rarities; a 54-page book loaded with essays; assorted tchotchkes; and a 7 single containing two new remixes of Caught by the Fuzz and Richard III that were clearly done as a lark. Its a ridiculously generous set, so quibbling about the fact that the vinyl doesnt come housed in album sleeves feels like nitpicking, especially since the CDs chock-full of rarities more than deliver. The four discs of live recordings -- ranging from early radio sessions with Mark Radcliffe and their full set at Glastonbury 1997 to an acoustic set from Live at Ronnie Scotts around the time of Road to Rouen and an appearance on Later with Jools Holland for Diamond Hoo Ha -- effectively tell their story. Those earliest sessions are nervy and twitchy, but by their Glastonbury 1997 set (given in the wake of In It for the Money, when it was clear that I Should Coco was not a fluke) finds them hitting their stride. Having two discs of B-sides and non-LP rarities is handy -- and it also proves that they tucked away some material that couldve slid onto their proper albums, including the bluesy shuffle Odd? and Small Faces-styled stomp Melanie Davis -- but its the collection of unreleased outtakes, dubbed Roots & Vine, that underscores how giddy and inventive the band were. These are clearly rough, but hearing demos of their earliest songs shows how they could construct a classic pop tune from the start, and its fun to hear them muddle their way through the spacy pisstake Dark Star and groove to the soul instrumental Stinkfinger. While its hard to argue these outtakes are essential, the live material does offer confirmation that Supergrass were one of the best bands of their era: clever, muscular, smart, and tuneful, and blessed with an exuberance that hasnt diminished over the years. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
