パリーの知られざるオラトリオ
「ユディト」世界初録音!

チャールズ・ヒューバート・パリーのオラトリオ「ユディト」(英語読みではジュディス)は、バーミンガム音楽祭の委嘱により制作、1888年にバーミンガムで行われた初演は大成功を収め、大規模なオーケストラと合唱のための作曲家としてパリーの確固たる地位を固めましたが、パリーの死後は忘れ去られたままとなっていた作品です。
聖書のマナセやユディトの物語を元にパリー自身がリブレットを書いた2幕のオラトリオで、当初イスラエル王マナセを中心にした物語として「マナセの改悛(The Regeneration of Manasseh)」をタイトルとしていましが、後にユディトの活躍が中心になり、正題を「ユディト」とし、副題として「マナセの改悛」も残されました。

2015年にスティーヴン・マーティン指揮、パックス・クリスティ管弦楽団&合唱団によって北米初演が行われてからこの作品への関心が高まり、ロンドン・イングリッシュ・ソング・フェスティバルの創設者ウィリアム・ヴァンが2019年4月に130年ぶりとなるロンドン公演を実現させました(左に掲載の写真はロイヤル・フェスティヴァル・ホールで行われたライヴの様子)。その数週間後にセント・ジュード・オン・ザ・ヒル教会で改めてレコーディング・セッションが組まれ、オーケストラや合唱の優れた録音で定評のあるChandosのSACDサラウンド・サウンドによる世界初録音が完成しました。
