Richard Strauss Eine Alpensinfonie, Op. 64, is a bit less often performed than the other major Strauss tone poems due to its sheer demands: 120 musicians, offstage trumpets, and wind parts so strenuous that Strauss suggested the players could use a newly invented wind machine to play them if desired. A cynic might claim that this is possibly the least relaxing stroll in the Alps in existence, but its various stages are extraordinarily vivid once one accepts the overheated quality of the thing. Herbert von Karajans magisterial early 1980s version with the Berlin Philharmonic remains the standard, but Vasily Petrenko, leading his Oslo Philharmonic, gives him strong competition here. Petrenko has conducted the work many times, with the Oslo group and with various English orchestras, and his reading has a remarkable combination of forward motion and detail, slightly quicker than usual but never rushed. The Berlin strings may be silkier as the walker reaches the peak in Auf dem Gipfel and in the Vision that follows, but the Gewitter und Sturm here has a startling immediacy. Nor does Petrenko neglect the long line: although Eine Alpensinfonie and Tod und Verklarung, Op. 24, are tone poems, each has aspects of symphonic form, elegantly delineated here. Tod und Verklarung (Death and Transfiguration) was referred to by Strauss on his deathbed, who remarked that dying was just as he had composed it, and here, Petrenko gets the hushed, mystic quality at the end. This album concludes Petrenkos short and generally acclaimed cycle of Strauss tone poems, and its an important statement from a major conductor.
