スイスの作曲家リヒャルト・フルーリー。大学時代にロマン派の作曲家ハンス・フーバーから作曲のレッスンを受け、卒業後にはヨーゼフ・マルクスから作曲、フェリックス・ヴァインガルトナーから指揮を学び、音楽家としての道を歩みました。彼の作風は師のフーバーやマルクスからの影響を受け継いだ後期ロマン派風の雰囲気を帯びていますが、その作品には20世紀初頭の新古典主義や印象派の影響も感じられる、さまざまな手法が取り入れられているのが特徴です。このバレエ「魔法の鏡」は、彼が若い頃から情熱を燃やしていた劇場のための音楽で、男女間の「秘められた恋愛」から生まれるいざこざを魔法の呪文とダンスのステップで包んだ"大人のメルヘン"といえる内容。場面ごとに様々なスタイルを融合させた曲が付けられた楽しい作品です。そのほぼ30年前に作曲された「小さなバレエ音楽」も、無邪気な各曲のタイトルの背後に、きわめて躍動的な音楽が隠されています。ポール・マンが指揮するニュルンベルク交響楽団の演奏が、彼が表現したかったであろう「ざわめく世界」を見事に描き出しています。
