R&B、ラップ、ポップ、ダンス・ミュージックを見事にブレンドした画期的なサウンドを全編で展開し、全米ダンス・チャートNo.1を獲得した「Buffalo Stance」やマッシヴ・アタックのロバート・デル・ナジャのプロデュースによる「Kisses On The Wind」、さらには「Manchild」、「Heart」「Inna City Mamma」などの大ヒット・シングルを送り出した1989年アルバム。
ニューヨークのヒップホップやシカゴ・ハウスのナイトクラブ・ライフ、日本発の前衛ファッション等により育まれたストリート・カルチャーと、人々の日常生活を描いた歌詞にも色濃く反映された多民族の連帯/コミュニティ精神を、当時のサッチャー政権が推進した個人主義的政策に対するカウンター・パンチとして強烈に凝縮させた作品。1990年代に始まるブリット・ポップ・ブームの前夜に、ダンス・フロア・ピープルがダンス・フロア・ピープルのために創造した英国ブラック・ミュージックを、コマーシャル/クリエイティヴの両面で爆発させた革命的作品、と賞される。

Those arguing that the most individualistic R&B and dance music of the late 80s and early to mid-90s came out of Britain could point to Neneh Cherrys unconventional Raw Like Sushi as a shining example. An unorthodox and brilliantly daring blend of R&B, rap, pop, and dance music, Sushi enjoyed little exposure on Americas conservative urban contemporary radio formats, but was a definite underground hit. Full of personality, the singer/rapper is as thought-provoking as she is witty and humorous when addressing relationships and taking aim at less-than-kosher behavior of males and females alike. Macho homeboys and Casanovas take a pounding on So Here I Come and the hit Buffalo Stance, while women who are shallow, cold-hearted, or materialistic get lambasted on Phoney Ladies, Heart, and Inna City Mamma.
