Live at the Royal Albert Hall 1974

英国ロック界の粋と浪漫を体現するレジェンド、ブライアン・フェリー。昨年ロキシー・ミュージックがロックの殿堂入りを果たし、また3月には久しぶりの来日公演を行い、ここ日本のファンにもその渋さと円熟味が増したダンディズム溢れるステージを披露するなど、現在も精力的に活動を続けている。その彼の貴重なソロ初期のライヴ音源がCDとアナログで発売される。

『LIVE AT THE ROYAL HALL 1974』は、タイトルにもあるように、ブライアン・フェリーがイギリスはロンドンのロイヤル・アルバート・ホールで1974年に行ったライヴを収録したもの1973年、ロキシー・ミュージックの活動と並行する形でソロ・アーティストとしてのキャリアをスタートされたフェリーは、その年に『THESE FOOLISH THINGS』、そして翌1974年には『ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE』と2作のアルバムを発表した。どちらのアルバムも、フェリーによる他のアーティストの曲のカヴァーが中心となった作品である。

ソロ・アーティストとして初めてのツアーからの音源を収録した本ライヴ・アルバムは、この2枚のアルバムからの楽曲から構成されており、ロキシー・ミュージックのライヴとはまた違った趣を醸し出している。アルバムの幕を開けるのは、ローリング・ストーンズの「Sympathy For The Devil / 悪魔を憐れむ歌」。さらにビーチ・ボーイズの「Don't Worry Baby」やビートルズの「You Won't See Me」、エルヴィス・プレスリーの「Baby I Don't Care」、ミラクルズの「The Tracks of My Tears」、そしてボブ・ディランの「A Hard Rain's A-Gonna-Fall」など幅広いアーティストの楽曲が並ぶ。ちなみにセカンド・ソロ・アルバムのタイトルトラックでもある「Another Time, Another Place」は、フェリーのオリジナル・ナンバーである。この他、フェリーが聞いて育ったような「These Foolish Things」や「Smoke Gets In Your Eyes(煙が目にしみる)」などの1930年代、40年代のスタンダード・ナンバーもフィーチャーされている。

ブライアン・フェリーがロイヤル・アルバート・ホールで初めてライヴを行ったのは、1974年12月19日だった。1972年からロイヤル・アルバート・ホールは、ロック、ポップスのアーティストが公演を行うことを禁止しており、当時多数のアーティストが会場側から拒否されていたという。1974年、『ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE』をリリースしたブライアン・フェリーも1月31日に公演を行いたいとプロモーターが申請したところ、会場側から許可が下りなかったとの話も伝わっている。(その数か月後から徐々にポップス、ロック系のアーティストへの扉が開いていったとのこと)そうした紆余曲折を経て実現した、ロイヤル・アルバート・ホール公演。貴重な音源が45年の時を経て、今ファンの元へ届けられる――!

Bryan Ferry had released two solo albums when he took the stage at Londons Royal Albert Hall in December 1974. Both of them, 1973s These Foolish Things and 1974s Another Time, Another Place, had found him transferring the swaggering, arty glitter-rock of his band Roxy Music into a series of well-curated covers from the 1930s through the 1960s. It was an iconoclastic move, comparable to David Bowies Pin Ups, but adorned with Ferrys own dashing pop elan and smooth theatricality. As an interpreter of standards, American Popular or otherwise, Ferry had impossibly combined the hazy sheen of golden-era Hollywood glamour with a wry singer/songwriter sincerity and a wallop of good-time rock & roll. He brought all of this jazzy charisma to bear on this live concert date, offering a cross section of songs from these two solo productions. Joining him were several Roxy Music regulars, including guitarists Phil Manzanera and John Porter, drummer Paul Thompson, and Roxy Music-adjacent pianist/violinist Eddie Jobson, who also supplied string arrangements. Also on board was King Crimson bassist and future Asia vocalist John Wetton. Rounding out Ferrys stage group were a sundry mix of horn and string players, keyboardists, and a trio of female backing vocalists. The result is a vibrantly dynamic live sound that straddles the line between Rocky Horror Picture Show and Elvis: As Recorded at Madison Square Garden. Here, Ferry offers singularly inspired takes on Lesley Gores Its My Party, Smokey Robinsons The Tracks of My Tears, Ike & Tina Turners Fingerpoppin, and a raging, goose bump-inducing reading of Bob Dylans A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall. Also redolent is Ferrys love of jazz standards, represented here with his rousing take on These Foolish Things, one that would come into even brighter focus in years to come on albums like 2012s The Jazz Age and 2018s Bitter-Sweet. One of the key delights in Ferrys work in the standards arena is the way he makes song lyrics take on new and unexpected meaning. Hearing him intone the iconic opening line from the Rolling Stones Sympathy for the Devil -- Please allow me to introduce myself, Im a man of wealth and taste -- is to witness Ferry both cheekily underlining his public persona with Roxy Music and recontextualizing his aesthetic as a tuxedo-wearing matinee rock idol in his own right. ~ Matt Collar
