Ready or Not

グレイトフル・デッドのアーカイヴ・プロジェクトからまた興味深い音源が公式リリースされる。今回リリースとなるのは、バンドの最晩年にあたる90年代初頭の未発表ライヴ音源である。1989年10月31日のハロウィーンに、結果的にはバンド最後のスタジオ・アルバムとなる『BUILT TO LAST』をリリースした彼らは、その後もライヴを行いながら新たな曲を作り続けていた。その新曲のいくつかはライヴでも披露されていたが、1995年にジェリー・ガルシアが亡くなったことにより、残念ながら新たなスタジオ・アルバムとして発表されることはなかった。

『BUILT TO LAST』に続くスタジオ・アルバムがどのような作品になっていたかは、今となっては誰も知る由はないが、バンドのオフィシャル・アーカイヴィストであるDavid Lemieuxは、今回、彼らの最晩年にあたる1992年から1993年のライヴで披露された、新曲の未発表ライヴ音源を集めたアルバムをキュレートした。それにより、聴くものはその"『BUILT TO LAST』に続くはずだったスタジオ・アルバム"のサウンドを推測することができるかも知れないのだ。

本作『READY OR NOT』に収録されている音源は、グレイトフル・デッド最晩年となる楽曲の、ベスト未発表ライヴ・ヴァージョンを膨大なライヴ・レコーディングの中から選び抜き、サウンドボードからのオリジナル・デジタル・テープからリマスターしたものである。これらのライヴ音源は、1992年から1995年の間に亘り、デッド最晩年のラインアップ:ジェリー・ガルシア(リードギター, ヴォーカル)、ボブ・ウェア(リズムギター, ヴォーカル)、ヴィンス・ウェルニック(キーボード, ヴォーカル)、フィル・レッシュ(ベース, ヴォーカル)、ビル・クルーツマン(ドラムス)、ミッキー・ハート(ドラムス)によってレコーディングされた。アルバムに収録された9曲の内、4曲(「Lazy River Road」、「Liberty」、「Days Between」そしてボブ・ウィアーがロブ・ワッサーマンとウィリー・ディクソンと一緒に作った「Eternity」)は1993年2月に初披露された新曲である。ちなみにアルバムの最後を飾るロバート・ハンターとジェリー・ガルシア作の「Days Between」は、Oakland-Alameda Conty Coliseumで1994年12月のライヴ・ヴァージョンが収録されている。

これまでジェリー・ガルシアと主にソングライティングを行っていたロバート・ハンターだが、この時期にはボブ・ウィアーともソングライティングを行うようになり、本作にはその二人による新曲「Corinna」と「Easy Answers」がフィーチャーされている。またロバート・ハンターが作詞を手掛けたヴィンス・ウェルニックによる「Samba In The Rain」も収録されている。この他の楽曲「Way To Go Home」と「So Many Roads」は、アルバムに収録されているヴァージョンの数か月前、1992年の2月に初披露された楽曲である。

『READY OR NOT』――最晩年のグレイトフル・デッドが目指していた"未来"を窺うことができる貴重な未発表ライヴ音源のリリースである。

A perennial live experience, the Grateful Deads studio output was usually overshadowed by their legendary endless touring and the multitudes of live recordings it produced. After a prolific 70s, their studio output slowed dramatically during the 80s. The band focused on touring, with their final studio album, Built to Last, coming out seven years before Jerry Garcias death in 1995. The Dead hadnt completely disavowed the studio, however, and were introducing new songs into their live repertoire throughout the early 90s. Ready or Not collects select concert performances of nine songs the group were workshopping for what would have been their 14th studio album. Played only a handful of times in 1992 and 1993, the material falls into the classic, drifting sway of live Grateful Dead meandering but holds glimpses of the core songwriting strengths the band built their empire on. The reflective mid-tempo composition So Many Roads is perhaps the best example of this. The dusty and nostalgic tune could fit in almost anywhere in the groups discography, with this seven-plus-minute version making plenty of space for Garcias signature guitar soloing. Eternity is a more boogie-oriented number, but the wiggly and mystical Bob Weir-led song could also fit in as a bonus cut on Wake of the Flood or Terrapin Station. Some of the material suffers from the bands cornier early-90s tendencies. Way to Go Home is a tedious would-be rave-up that never really gets off the ground, and the faux horns and late-night talk show groove of Easy Answers didnt age well. The good coming hand in hand with the bad is just part of the unspoken contract fans make with the Grateful Dead, however. Around the corner from every dud is a beautiful moment like Days Between. Ready or Not indeed offers a glimpse of what another studio album from what turned out to be the groups later phase would have sounded like, only with the buffer of comfort that comes from them working out the songs on-stage. Its a document not quite like any of the Deads hundreds of other archival releases, zeroing in on unfamiliar and exciting material. Theres a bittersweetness in knowing that this is as much of an idea as well ever get for what was next on the agenda for the band when their time ran out. ~ Fred Thomas
