【ジョン・バットが劇的に聴かせる、ヘンデルの大作オラトリオ『サムソン』】
1739年頃から構想され、『メサイア』の初演後ほぼ間もなく1742年に完成したヘンデル最大のオラトリオ。英ルネサンスの詩人ジョン・ミルトンによる劇詩『闘士サムソン』を元に、ニューバラ・ハミルトンが起こしたテキストを使用した劇的オラトリオで、1743年にロンドンで初演され、大きな評判となりました。
ヘンデル作品を積極的に取り上げてきたジョン・バットは、ここでベーレンライター社刊ハンス=ディーター・クラウセン新校訂版の1743年初演稿を使用。合唱のソプラノ・パートにはボーイ・ソプラノを起用し、最新研究に沿ったヘンデルの時代の響きを再現すると共に、力強い表現で作品の魅力を十二分に発揮しています。
