2019年6月に発売され、全英1位、全米2位を獲得したブルース・スプリングスティーン5年ぶり通算19作目となるオリジナル・ニューアルバム『ウェスタン・スターズ』がコンサート・ドキュメンタリー・フィルムとして映画化。この映画はブルース・スプリングスティーンの監督デビュー作となる。この映画のサウンドトラック盤として『ウェスタン・スターズ―ソングズ・フロム・ザ・フィルム』が急遽リリースされることが決定。同サウンドトラックにはスプリングスティーンの最新スタジオ・アルバム『ウェスタン・スターズ』の全収録曲の完全再現ライヴに加え、グレン・キャンベルへの追悼の意を込め「ラインストーン・カウボーイ」のカヴァーが収録される。20人のフル・オーケストラを含む30人を超えるバンドをバックにした音の厚み、迫力満点のライヴ・パフォーマンス、また終盤の2曲ではパティ・スキャルファとのデュエットを聴かせるなど、スタジオ盤とは一味違う魅力が満載。『ウェスタン・スターズ―ソングズ・フロム・ザ・フィルム』はスプリングスティーンとロン・アニエッロがサウンドトラックのプロデュースを手がけ、音声はボブ・クリアマウンテンがリミックス、ボブ・ラドウィックがマスタリングを担当した。(1/2)

映画『ウェスタン・スターズ』はスプリングスティーンの5年ぶりのスタジオ・アルバムを映画として表現した作品。ニュージャージー州コルツネック(Colts Neck)のストーン・ヒル・ファーム(Stone Hill Farm)で20人のフル・オーケストラを含む30人を超えるバンドをバックにアルバムの楽曲を演奏するシーンを中心に収録。この映画は2019年度のトロント国際映画祭で初上映された。脚本と演奏はブルース・スプリングスティーンが手がけている。スペシャル・ゲストにパティ・スキャルファを迎え、プロデュースはジムニー、ジョン・ランダウ、バーバラ・カー、ジョージ・トラヴィスが担当し、スプリングスティーンがエクゼクティヴ・プロデューサーを務めた。オリジナル・スコアはスプリングスティーンによるもの。長年のコラボレーターのトム・ジムニーがスプリングスティーンとともに今作の共同監督を務めている。

スプリングスティーンは以前のインタビューでこう語っていた。「このアルバムのツアーは行わないことはわかっていた。なのでこの作品をを観客に届ける方法はないか考えていたが、これ(映画)が最適な方法だと考えた。みんなに見てもらうのを楽しみにしているよ」。

アルバム『ウェスタン・スターズ』は、スプリングスティーン史上有数の傑作として全世界で大絶賛の嵐を呼び、また同作が全英1位を獲得したことにより、スプリングスティーンはデヴィッド・ボウイやローリング・ストーンズと並び、「全英1位を最も獲得したアーティスト」の上位5位以内に入った。

本作は、オリジナル・スタジオ・アルバム『ウェスタン・スターズ』と全曲再現アルバム『ウェスタン・スターズ―ソングズ・フロム・ザ・フィルム』をセットにした2枚組CD。スタジオ盤を未体験のファンにもライヴとセットで楽しめるお買い得盤となっている。(2/2)

Bruce Springsteen chose not to tour behind Western Stars, the lush album he released at the start of the summer of 2019. Instead, he decided to underscore its cinematic undercurrent by releasing a film documenting a performance of the albums songs recorded with a full orchestra in an old barn. In the film, the songs are punctuated by stories and narration from Bruce, but the soundtrack album merely replicates the running order of the studio album, adding a cover of Glen Campbells Rhinestone Cowboy as an elegiac closer (its key line theres been a load of compromisin/on the road to my horizon could be sung by any of Bruces characters on Western Stars). Springsteen reportedly labored over Western Stars for years, so its not surprising that the arrangements on Western Stars: Songs from the Film essentially mimic those on the studio set; not only did he get those tunes right on record, he was out promoting the album. Because of this, Western Stars: Songs from the Film doesnt pack a wallop, but it does have its own distinct vibe, largely due to his vocal performance. On the studio set, he can soar with grace, but here Springsteen seems a little weathered -- a tonal texture that suits his bittersweet tunes, and also lends itself well to the occasional harmony from Patti Scialfa. Springsteens earthy phrasing helps ground these songs and makes for an intriguing, occasionally moving complement to the main album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
