1992年ロンドン生まれの新世代ピアニスト、モメンのSOMM RESORDINGSへのソロ・デビュー・アルバム。モメンはロンドンのギルドホール音楽院の卒業生で、リチャード・グードやアンドラーシュ・シフに師事。アルバム・タイトル「VARIATIONS」は"変わるもの、変わらないものへの問いかけである"と考えるモメンが選んだ曲は、シューマン夫妻の作品を中心に、二人巡るメンデルスゾーン、ブラームスなどロマン派の作品から、モメン自身が2人の現代作曲家に委嘱し、2019年に完成した作品までと多彩なもの。その中の1曲を書いたニコ・ミューリーは2018年にメトロポリタン歌劇場でオペラ「マーニー」が初演され、日本でもライブ・ビューイングで話題になった作曲家。もう一人の作曲家アイヤーは、ニューヨークで活躍するジャズ・ピアニスト。現代作品とロマン派作品の融合が興味深い1枚です。
