WHAT JAIL IS LIKE is a seven-track EP showcasing the title track, one of singer Greg Dulli's tortured relationship epics. A live version of "What Jail Is Like" gives the song a whiskey-soaked edge that adds even more tension. "Mr. Superlove," a cover of a song by fellow Cincinnatians, The Ass Ponys, sounds exactly like a Dulli original. This gut-churning tale of an unstable relationship--rather perversely set to the jangle of a banjo--ends with a death and offers the listener no redemption. Dann Penn's "Dark End of the Street" and Rodgers and Hart's "Little Girl Blue" are examples of the Whigs' uncanny ability to find classics that fit the band's world-view and to remake such songs as originals. A dense, live version of "Now You Know" fits here just as well as it did on GENTLEMEN, summing up the previous songs with the line, "Bit into a rotten one now, didn't you?" Closing this collection is a live medley of Supremes standards, "My World Is Empty Without You" and "I Hear A Symphony."
